Goldeyes Fail to Sweep RailCats, Wild Card Lead Just a Game

August 23, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes' lead in the American Association's wild card race has shrunk to a single game.

The Goldeyes couldn't complete the sweep of the Gary SouthShore RailCats Thursday afternoon, losing 1-0 in the final game of the three-game series.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mike Rohde doubled in Brian Kolb, who was hit by a pitch to reach base and stole second base.

Winnipeg's best chance to break Gary's shutout came in the first inning when Yurendell de Caster was thrown out at home plate for the third out.

Barbaro Canizares and Josh Mazzola each had two hits for Winnipeg. As a team, the Goldeyes only had six hits in the game.

Goldeyes starter Matt Rusch went six innings and took the loss after giving up just the one run and two hits.

Morgan Coombs won his sixth game of the season for Gary by pitching eight scoreless innings, while Marco Gonzalez earned his sixth save of the season.

The Goldeyes now move on to face the St. Paul Saints in a pivotal four-game series at Midway Stadium. It's the Saints, who are on a six-game winning streak, that trail the Goldeyes by a game in the wild card race.

The pre-game show on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday night. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
