
Coombs Throws Gem in 1-0 Shutout of Winnipeg

GARY, Ind. - Morgan Coombs threw eight scoreless innings, shutting down the Goldeyes in the RailCats 1-0 win on Wednesday afternoon. The win brings the RailCats back to .500 on the season with a 45-45 record. They now stand 5 1/2 games back of Winnipeg in the Wild Card standings with 10 games left in the regular season.
The 'Cats broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Goldeyes' starter Matt Rusch, the league leader in ERA at 2.65 entering the day. Brian Kolb was hit by a pitch and stole second, then Mike Rohde drove him home with a double off the left field wall to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. It was the only run for either team on the day.
The Goldeyes had a chance to score in the top of the first but Trevor Willis threw out Yurendell de Caster at the plate to keep the Fish off the board.
Coombs (6-7) pitched eight scoreless frames, the longest start of his career, throwing just 86 pitches. He allowed five hits, struck out six and walked just one. He is currently riding a 15 1/3 scoreless inning streak. Marco Gonzalez came on in the ninth to record his sixth save this season. It is the sixth shutout victory by the RailCats this year and the first since they beat Sioux City 2-0 on July 24th.
Rusch (8-4) went six strong innings for the Goldeyes, allowing the lone run on just two hits. Rusch struck out three and walked one. His league-leading ERA is now down to 2.60.
The RailCats will travel to Wichita where they start a three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 PM. Will Krout will go for the 'Cats in the series opener.
