Goldeyes Edged by JackHammers, 4-3

July 10, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes bats continue to struggle to find timely hits and the losing streak continues to mount.

Winnipeg only manged two scoring plays that counted three runs in a 4-3 loss to the Joliet JackHammers before 5,446 fans at Canwest Park Saturday night.

It's Winnipeg's fifth consecutive loss.

Down 4-2 going into the bottom of ninth inning, Winnipeg made it interesting when Dee Brown scored on a Wes Long sac fly, but Juan Diaz flied out two batters later to end the game.

Joliet right fielder Jon Nelson blasted the first pitch he saw from Goldeyes reliever Philip Roy in the eighth inning to put the JackHammers up 3-2. The home run was a blast that sailed over the left-field fence.

In the seventh inning, Long hit a two-run single that deflected off of Joliet third baseman Ryan Wehrle's glove and into left field. Brown and Price Kendall scored from third and second to tie the game 2-2.

Joliet opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.

Goldeyes starting pitcher Chris Salamida allowed just two runs in seven strong innings, but was never in a position to win the game, as he left with the game tied 2-2.

Kyle Dahman go the win for Joliet, while Philip Roy suffers the loss for Winnipeg. Griffin Bailey picked up his third-straight save of the series by pitching the ninth inning for the JackHammers.

Goldeyes Notes

* The Goldeyes losing streak has climbed to five games. * The loss, combined with the Kansas City T-Bones win in Gary tonight, means the Goldeyes are now 6.5 games behind first-place Kansas City. * Winnipeg has slipped to fourth place in the Northern League for the third time this season. However, the previous two times the Goldeyes were within a game and a half of first place. * The Fish trail the season series with Joliet 6-9 and have lost five of the seven games against the JackHammers at Canwest Park. * Winnipeg stranded exactly one base runner in every inning. * Winnipeg has gone three-straight games without a homer. * Joliet has pounded out 39 hits on Winnipeg in the first three games of this series. * Wes Long's two RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a four-game RBI-less streak. * Chris Salamida went seven innings to tie his second-longest start of the season. He has gone seven innings three times this season. * The two earned runs Salamida gave up is the lowest in his last five starts. * Philip Roy has allowed at least one run in his last six appearances.
