Santos Stifles Cats, Leads T-Bones to Series Victory

GARY, Ind. - Left-hander Reid Santos (2-3) held the Gary SouthShore RailCats (23-25) to one run over seven solid innings of work as the Kansas City T-Bones (31-17) secured a series victory with a 6-1 win at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, IN.

Santos secured his first win since June 4 with the outing, holding Gary to just five hits over his seven innings while striking out six and walking two. Gary picked up their lone run on a one-out home run by Cristian Guerrero in the fourth inning, just the second hit allowed by Santos at that point in the game. The RailCats pushed just two runners past first base over the final five frames.

Santos tied season highs for strikeouts and innings pitched in the contest, and posted his lowest runs allowed total of the campaign.

Tom Thornton (1-4) held the league's best offense scoreless through two innings before an unearned run in the top of the third gave the T-Bones a 1-0 lead. Jacob Blackwood singled with one out in the inning and advanced to third with a stolen base and throwing error by Gary catcher Louis Ott. A sacrifice fly from Rico Washington then plated Blackwood for Kansas City's first run.

The T-Bones broke a 1-1 tie on a two-run double by Ray Sadler in the fifth inning. Eladio Rodriguez connected for a two-run home run, his third of the season, to chase Thornton and push the score to 5-1 in the sixth. James Baker entered and surrendered an RBI single to Blackwood later in the frame to cap off the scoring at 6-1.

Thornton suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in five and one-thirds innings. Kevin Light struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect eighth, and Franklin Perez added a scoreless ninth to finish the game for Kansas City.

Blackwood finished the contest three-for-four with an RBI, extending his hit streak to 13 games. He is now tied with Ray Sadler for the longest hit streak by a T-Bones player this season.

Kansas City set a single-game team record with seven stolen bases in the contest, with Jimmy Mojica becoming just the fifth T-Bones player to steal three in a game.

The T-Bones look to close out the first half of the season with a three-game sweep of Gary tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. Cody McAllister (4-3, 3.93) takes the mound for Kansas City versus former major leaguer Brad Halsey (2-3, 4.00) and the RailCats.
