Nelson Leads JackHammers to Sixth Straight Victory

WINNIPEG, MB, Canada - Jon Nelson broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth with a solo home run and knocked home the game winning run in the ninth to give the Joliet JackHammers (25-22) a 4-3 victory Saturday night over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-24) at Canwest Park. The JackHammers have now won six straight games, including four straight over the Goldeyes, and will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Nelson pounced on the first pitch from Philip Roy (2-2) and drove it over the wall in left to put the JackHammers out in front 3-2. Nelson did it again in the ninth off Casey Hodges, sending a double to center for a 4-2 advantage. Kevin Rios and Brad Correll each singled with two outs to set the stage for Nelson in the ninth.

The Goldeyes tied the game with two runs in the seventh off Kyle Dahman (1-1). Dee Brown singled with one out and Price Kendall followed with a single to put runners at second and third with one out. Wes Long singled off the glove of Ryan Wehrle at third to knot the game at two.

Winnipeg threatened in the bottom of the ninth, plating one against Griffin Bailey. Brown coaxed a leadoff walk and Kendall singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Long knocked in his third run of the night with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. Bailey recovered and retired the final two to earn his eighth save.

Devin Anderson went the first six for Joliet, holding the Goldeyes scoreless on six hits. The lefty struck out three and walked one to earn a no decision.

Correll led the JackHammers with three hits with Colton, Wehrle, Nelson, Jonathan Wyatt and Freddie Thon each collecting two hits.

Joliet will look for the four game sweep tomorrow when Rory Shortell (1-4) takes the mound opposite Ace Walker (3-2). Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. with a 1:20 p.m. pre-game show on the JackHammers Radio Network.

Loose Gravel - The JackHammers won their 25th game, the most by any Joliet team prior to the All-Star break - Jonathan Wyatt, Jon Nelson and Freddie Thon each extended their hitting streaks to nine, seven and seven respectively - Joliet is now 8-6 against Winnipeg and earned the season series victory over the Goldeyes
