Schaumburg Flyers News Release

FARGO, ND - Schaumburg starter Ryan Gehring (3-3) made one bad pitch all night, but Nic Jackson made him pay. The Fargo-Moorhead slugger launched a seventh inning grand slam to give the Redhawks (28-17) a 5-4 win over the Flyers (19-30) at Newman Outdoor Field Saturday night.

Both Gehring and Redhawks starter Jake Laber (5-2) began the game retiring the first six batters they faced and the pitcher's duel was on.

The Flyers broke through in the fourth as Travis Brown singled up the middle and Joey Gomes smacked a double off the center field wall with two outs to put the Flyers up by one.

Fargo-Moorhead tied it up in the fifth, benefiting from some shaky Flyers defense. Kole Zimmerman began the frame reaching on a Brown error and Jake Krause then singled. A batter later, Mike Coles' infield single scored Zimmerman.

Schaumburg struck back in the sixth when Brown led off with a base hit up the middle and stole second. After Ron Bourquin lined out to center, Gomes laced a hit back through the box, plating Brown. The Schaumburg first baseman finished the night 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Flyers got into trouble again in the seventh after Zimmerman singled and Krause reached on an error by third baseman Ron Bourquin. Cory Patton struck out, but then Mike Coles singled to right to load the bases. Gehring forced Zach Penprase to strike out looking, but then missed to Jackson and he drove it out for a grand slam to give the Redhawks a 5-4 lead.

But Schaumburg wasn't dead yet. The Flyers got two back in the top of the eighth on Josh Burrus' base hit through the left side and a Richard Mercado fielder's choice with the bases loaded to cut the Redhawks lead to 5-4.

Cory Patton came in to close out the ninth and the usual position player retired the side in order to notch his second save of the year.

Gehring tossed eight innings in the loss, giving up no earned runs and striking out four while absorbing the loss. Laber picked up the win, hurling 7.1 strong innings. The lefty allowed four runs on nine hits, striking out four.

The Flyers conclude the first half and their four game set with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks at Newman Outdoor Field Sunday afternoon.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the Redhawks. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 12:50 PM with the game to follow.
