Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
A second straight comeback attempt fell just short and the Winnipeg Goldeyes put another notch in the loss column.
Saturday night in front of 5,755 loud and enthusiastic spectators at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg, the Goldeyes fought back from a 4-0 deficit to tie their game with the visiting Kansas City T-Bones, only to watch K.C. score a run in the top of the ninth to win it 5-4.
"We're playing hard all nine innings," said a frustrated Wes Long afterward. "It's just so frustrating to not close down games. We have a good offense, but we aren't getting enough clutch hits.
"And like you said, we aren't getting off to very good starts. We always find ourselves coming from behind. We play hard. We don't give up. It's just frustrating that we can't get big hits when we need them."
For the second straight night, Winnipeg started slowly at home.
Kansas City scored a run in the first, added another in the third and went ahead 3-0 in the fourth on a solo homer by Ray Sadler all off starter Isaac Hess. Then, in the seventh, the T-Bones scored a fourth run, this one off reliever Barry Fowler and it appeared as if K.C. would cruise to its second straight win in this series.
But in the seventh, the Goldeyes battled back - and they did it with the benefit of just one single. Louis Ott led off with a walk and then Victor Ferrante followed with another walk. Alan Rick was safe on an error and then Price Kendall was hit by a pitch. Ott walked home from third and the Fish had cut K.C.'s lead to 4-1.
Kody Kaiser then grounded out to first to drive Ferrante home with the second run and with Rick at third and Kendall at second, Long drilled a solid single to left to plate two more runs and tie the game at 4-4.
But in the ninth, with Goldeyes closer Jamie Vermilyea on the bump, Fernando Garcia led off with a single, Keanon Simon sent him to second with a sacrifice bunt and then Rico Washington just got his bat on a low, outside pitch and punched it into leftfield to drive home Simon with the eventual winning run.
The T-Bones finished with five runs on nine hits, while the Goldeyes could manage only four runs on nine hits. Kansas City improved to 13-15 with the win while the Goldeyes fell to 15-14 with the loss.
T-Bones reliever Cole Lohden (1-0, 15.43 ERA), earned the win while Jamie Vermilyea (1-1, 2.19 ERA) suffered the loss for Winnipeg.
Andy Shipman (2.92) picked up his seventh save of the campaign, his second in as many nights, for the T-Bones.
The Goldeyes and T-Bones will play the final game of this three-game set on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Shaw Park. Luis Villarreal (1-0 1.29 ERA) will toe the slab for the Goldeyes on Sunday while Kyle Dahman (0-0-, 3.15) will take to the hill for Kansas City.
The game, featuring Paul Edmonds on the AM microphone, can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290.
