St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - It took a second day, but it was worth the wait for the St. Paul Saints as they snapped another team's long winning streak defeating the Gary SouthShore Railcats 5-1 on Saturday evening at Midway Stadium in front of 4,165. The game was a continuation from Friday night's suspended game in the second inning.
When the game resumed the Railcats tied the game in the third inning when Mike Massaro singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Toddrick Jones. That would be the only run the Railcats, winners of six straight entering the game, would score. Jake Schmidt came out of relief for starter Alberto Rolon when the game was resumed and went 6.0 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking three and striking out two.
The Saints wasted little time in answering putting up four runs in the bottom of the inning. Adam Frost led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt single from Justin Snyder and scored on a sacrifice fly from Richard Mercado. Jason Cooper then singled and with two outs Jeff Howell hit a three-run homer to left, his second of the season, to give the Saints a 5-1 lead.
That was all the runs the Saints would need as they silenced the Railcats. The big play of the night came in the eighth inning with the Railcats batting, runners at first and second and two outs. Mike Rhode singled to right and with Chris Carrara attempting to score from second, right fielder Brandon Tripp threw behind the runner at second and nailed Craig Maddox, who had taken two big a turn. The out was recorded before the run scored.
