Goldeyes Battle Back to Win Second Straight

June 26, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

What a way to say, "Good-bye."

Tuesday night at Shaw Park, Winnipeg Goldeyes reliever Brian Beuning pitched a brilliant four innings to earn his second win of the season as the Winnipeg Goldeyes came from behind to beat the Sioux City Explorers 8-7.

After Wednesday night's final game of the three-game series with Sioux City, Beuning will head back to Luverne, Minn., and go back to work as a Minnesota State Trooper.

"Brian is phenomenal," said Goldeyes pitching coach Bill Pulsipher. "That's the last time we'll see him because he goes back to his real job on Thursday, but what a pleasure he was to be around. I'd love to have him around all season. He allowed one unearned run tonight on one hit and got the win. What can you say? He was great."

Beuning has written an amazing story in his two weeks with the Goldeyes. He made five appearances, had a 2-0 record with a 0.82 ERA and nine strikeouts, including four on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Gabby Martinez snapped out of a one-for-19 slump with a single and a two-run homer, while Chris Roberson doubled twice and drove in two runs, including the winner.

The Goldeyes improved to 23-15 and remained in first place in the American Association's North Division, three games ahead of second place Sioux Falls.

"It was a baffling game for the pitchers," said Pulsipher. "Sally (starter Chris Salamida) threw a lot of quality pitches between the so-so pitches that cost him six runs. Brian was phenomenal and then Dexter (closer Carter) has just taken the few little mechanical changes we've made and run with them. He was great again."

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Goldeyes scored two in the second as Dan Barbero singled, Price Kendall singled and both baserunners came home on a double by Chris Roberson.

After Peter Barrows hit a grand slam home run in the third to give Sioux City a 5-2 lead, the Goldeyes bounced back with three in the bottom half as Luis Alen singled, Gabby Martinez singled and Josh Mazzola drove home Alen with another single. Then David Narodowski drove home both Martinez and Mazzola with yet another single.

The Explorers made it 6-5 in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom half of the fourth, Alen doubled and Martinez hit a two-run homer to straightaway centerfield.

But the Explorers wouldn't go away. Sioux City tied it in the top of the sixth on a single, an error, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but the Goldeyes answered in the bottom half as Roberson ripped his second double and scored on a single by Jon Weber. That proved to be the winning run but the Goldeyes didn't with it without some drama.

In the top of the ninth, Yusuke Inoguchi doubled off the glove of Josh Mazzola and closer Dexter Carter had to strike out Peter Barrows, who had five RBI on the night, for the final out.

Despite the fact the Goldeyes allowed seven runs, starter Salamida, middle reliever Beuning and closer Carter combined for 13 strikeouts.

Beuning got the win (2-0, 0.82 ERA) while Aaron Correa (0-1, 4.50 ERA) suffered the loss. Carter got his fourth save.

Wednesday night the Goldeyes and Explorers will play the final game of this three-game series at Shaw Park in Winnipeg. Goldeyes manager Rick Forney will announce his starter on Wednesday morning. Andrew Snowden (0-1, 7.13 ERA) will take the ball for Sioux City.

Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN Radio 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
