Goldeyes Add Lefty Starter Cornelius, Wilson Leaves for Mexico

Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of left-handed pitcher Jonathan Cornelius to a contract for the 2015 season and that veteran outfielder Mike Wilson has signed with Veracruz of the Mexican League.

Cornelius, 26, has played the last five seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals system, including reaching Class AAA Memphis of the Pacific Coast League for two starts last season. He played the majority of last season with Class AA Springfield, going 11-9 with a 3.99 ERA in 24 starts and two relief appearances. Fourteen of his 24 starts were quality starts.

The Land O' Lakes, Fla. product rose quickly through the Cards system, reaching a new level in each of his first four seasons. In 63 career starts, Cornelius is 20-23 with a 3.86 ERA.

Cornelius played five season of NCAA Division II baseball at Florida Tech after receiving a medical redshirt early in his second season. He finished his college career with a 28-9 record and 3.19 ERA in 48 starts and three relief appearances. Following his senior season, he held the school career records for strikeouts (356) and complete games (12).

Cornelius will make his Goldeyes debut tonight against the Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Goldeyes have 23 players on their roster, including 12 pitchers and 11 position players.

Winnipeg finishes a three-game series on the road against the Wingnuts tonight before heading to Joplin for three games this weekend against the Blasters. The Goldeyes return to Shaw Park on June 2 for their home opener against the Sioux Falls Canaries, which also begins a six-game homestand.
