Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-3) trailed early on Thursday night, but battled back for a big 4-1 win over the Quebec Capitales (3-4) in front of 2,246 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Reigning American Association Rookie-of-the-Year Jeremy Strawn (1-0, 1.35 ERA) picked up his first win in a Canaries uniform after allowing one unearned run over six innings of work. The right-hander gave up eight hits on the night, but worked his way out of several big jams, including a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bradenton, FL native walked Quebec's designated hitter, Yuniesky Gurriel, followed by a Tyler Young single, to load the bases before Jonathan Malo grounded out to end the inning.
The Birds' carried a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the sixth before first baseman David Bergin drove in both Jerome Pena and Bryan Humphries on a bases clearing double that bounced off the center field wall. Bergin later scored on the eventual game winning run three batters later on a Richard Stock RBI sacrifice groundout.
Bergin paced the Canaries offense going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. The 25 year-old Bergin is off to a good start offensively this season, posting a .346 batting average, with a home-run and 6 RBI through seven games with Sioux Falls.
The Birds' received another strong outing from their bullpen with Josh Ferrell and Chase Johnson combining for three shutout innings. Johnson earned his third save of the season after a quick 1-2-3 inning in the ninth.
The Birds' wrapped up their first series win of the 2015 season, and now gear up for their first divisional series of the year as they welcome the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to the Birdcage for a four-game set this weekend.
LHP Miguel Pena (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Birds' on Friday night. Stick around after the game for the first Friday night fireworks display of the season put on by All-Star Fireworks and sponsored by Orthopedic Institute and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
