Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Casey Haerther set the tone with a home run in the top of the first inning, but the rest of the Winnipeg Goldeyes bats couldn't find their rhythm.
The Goldeyes matched the Wichita Wingnuts nine hits, but lost 4-1 and were swept in the three-game series.
The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 3-4 on the young season.
Winnipeg's early lead was quickly erased, as Wichita tied the game in the bottom of the second and scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Goldeyes starter Jonathan Cornelius went 3 2/3 innings in his Goldeyes debut before turning it over to the bullpen, which kept the game close.
Anthony Smith and Raul Rivera combined for 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball before Gabe Aguilar was tagged with a run in the eighth inning. Benji Waite finished the last 2/3 of inning.
"Those are big innings that kept us in the ball game," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said of his bullpen on the Jewel 100.5 FM post-game show. "It could have gotten out of hand there, but they pitched very well and gave us a chance."
Winnipeg's best chance to tie the game came in the top of the ninth off Wichita closer Matt Nevarez. Haerther singled and Nic Jackson doubled to put runners on a second and third with none out. However, Nevarez struck out the next three batters he faced and the potential tying run couldn't get out of the batter's box.
Haerther had three hits for the Goldeyes, while Casio Grider and Brett Krill each posted two hits.
The Goldeyes set a new franchise record for the fewest runs scored in a three-game series by scoring just one run against the Wingnuts this week.
Wichita starter Anthony Capra picked up the win, while Cornelius suffered the loss. Nevarez picked up his second save in as many games against Winnipeg.
The Goldeyes will now head to Joplin to begin a three-game series with the expansion Blasters at Joe Becker Stadium Friday night. Kyle Anderson (0-0, 2.08) will get the start for Winnipeg against Joplin's Rob Tejeda (0-0, 6.23). It will be the Goldeyes first game in the state of Missouri in team history. Game time is 6:30 p.m. The pre-game show on Jewel 100.5 begins at 6:00 p.m.
