Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (May 27, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts improved their winning streak to four games on Wednesday night by shutting out the Winnipeg Goldeyes for a second straight game. The Nuts pitching staff faced just one batter over the minimum and recorded 13 strikeouts, while Dustin Geiger provided both run-scoring hits.

The Wingnuts (4-1) attacked against Goldeyes' right-hander Matt Jackson right out of the gates. Alberto Gonzalez singled with one out and moved to third on a sinking line drive base hit to right off the bat of T.J. Mittelstaedt. With runners on the corners, clean-up hitter Dustin Geiger hit a chopper to short that was fielded by shortstop Brad Boyer. Boyer tried to go the short way to second, but Mittelstaedt beat the flip initially, before being tagged out after stepping off the bag. Gonzalez scored on the play to make it 1-0.

That score held until the fourth inning when Geiger grabbed the spotlight again. He launched a line drive home run to left to begin the frame and propel the club to a 2-0 advantage.

That turned out to be all of the support that starter O mar Bencomo and the rest of the pitching staff would need for the evening. The right-hander never faced more than three Winnipeg hitters in an inning over 6.0 shutout frames. The native of Venezuela struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

After Bencomo's night came to an end, the ball was handed to relief pitcher Brad Mincey who induced three ground balls to work a quick seventh inning. In the eighth it was Daniel Carela's turn and the hard-throwing righty followed suit by striking out the side and working around a two out walk. That left the ninth inning in the hands of Matt Nevarez who quickly whiffed all three hitters in order to record his first save of the year.

The Wingnuts' pitching staff has thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings against the Goldeyes and 21 straight scoreless innings going back to Saturday night's win over Joplin.

The Nuts will attempt to sweep Winnipeg in the series finale on Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. LHP Anthony Capra, the team's opening day starter will be on the mound for Wichita against a pitcher to be named for the Goldeyes.
