Goaltending carries K-Wings to pair of wins
November 2, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
After starting the season winless through four games, the Kalamazoo Wings rebounded with a pair of wins in their two outings last week to move to 2-4-0 on the season.
Kalamazoo recorded its first win of the season on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over Indy. Darren Archibald led the way offensively with a pair of goals while David Gilbert added two assists. Joel Martin keyed the victory in goal as he stopped 47 of the Fuel's 50 shots, including stopping all 20 of their shots in the first period.
The K-Wings continued their strong play on Friday, handing Cincinnati its first loss of the season in a 3-1 victory. Justin Taylor, Adam Phillips and Lane Scheidl found the back of the net for Kalamazoo while Martin earned another win in goal with 33 saves.
Alex Mallet (2g-2a) and Gilbert (1g-3a) lead the way offensively for Kalamazoo with four points on the season while Martin has seen action in all six games for the K-Wings posting a 3.03 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. His two wins this season give him 124 in his ECHL career, and move him to within 10 wins of cracking the top 10 on the league's all-time wins list for a goaltender.
Kalamazoo has a busy week ahead with four games in five days starting with the team's annual Education Day game on Wednesday against Adirondack. The K-Wings then travel to Wheeling on Friday before a home-and-home series with Fort Wayne in Kalamazoo on Saturday and at Fort Wayne on Sunday.
Adirondack looks for best start in ECHL history
The Adirondack Thunder extended their season-opening winning streak to six games with victories over Orlando and Wheeling last week. The ECHL record for longest winning streak to start a season is eight consecutive wins, set by the 1994-95 Dayton Bombers and matched by the 2001-02 Trenton Titans.
After visiting Kalamazoo on Wednesday morning, Adirondack will visit Cincinnati on Friday and Toledo on Saturday as the Thunder look to extend their hot start to the 2015-16 season.
