Goaltender Ben Scrivens Assigned to Reading

Reading Royals News Release


Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that goaltender Ben Scrivens ["SCRIV ehnz"] has been assigned by the Maple Leafs from the Marlies to the Royals. In separate transactions, the Royals also released defenseman Steven Kaunisto ["kah KNEE stoh"] from his ECHL contract. The team also released defenseman A.J. Mikkelsen from his Tryout Agreement.

Last season, Scrivens (6'2/197) (24), who hails from Spruce Grove, Alberta, compiled a 21-9-4 record with a 1.87 goals against average and the nation's best save percentage (.934) in thirty-four games for the Cornell Big Red, who captured the ECAC Hockey tournament championship for the twelfth time in school history. In the ECAC Hockey tournament, Scrivens, who was selected as a Reebok Hockey Division I First Team All American, established a conference record by allowing just one goal in four games. In fact, Scrivens, who recorded nineteen shutouts in his four year career at Cornell, posted the third longest shutout streak in NCAA history during his senior season, going 267:11 at one stage without allowing a goal. Scrivens, who received ECAC Hockey's Ken Dryden Award as the Goaltender of the Year last season, completed his career at Cornell as the all-time leader in saves (2,873) and shutouts (19).

The Royals host the team's tenth anniversary home opener on Saturday, October 23, 2010 (7:05 pm), when the Elmira Jackals visit the Sovereign Center.
