Goalie Battle in Kelowna Ends in 2-1 Shootout Loss for Chiefs

Kelowna, B.C. - The Chiefs opened the scoring against the Kelowna Rockets for a second night in a row, but didn't score again and ultimately fell in a shootout to lose 2-1.

Spokane kicked things off at 13:29 in the first period when Post Falls native Bear Hughes once again netted the first goal of the game as he fired the puck into the left corner of the net from the face-off circle. It was Hughes' third power play goal of the year, and Cordel Larson and Graham Sward each earned an assist.

Jake Lee evened things up at just 2:42 in the second period, but then the rest of the game was a goalie battle. Mason Beaupit and Talyn Boyko showed off their skills, pushing the game into overtime and eventually eight shootout rounds. Beaupit was a wall in net as he turned aside 36 of 37 shots faced in regulation and overtime, then denied four Kelowna shots in the shootout. Meanwhile, Boyko stopped 38 of 39 shots faced throughout the game and turned aside shootout attempts from Hughes, Yannick Proske, Jack Finley, Cordel Larson and Copeland Fricker.

It was Turner McMillen who found himself the shootout hero for the Rockets after eight rounds.

What the game lacked in goal-scoring, it made up for in sheer physicality. Both teams were skating aggressively throughout the entire game, tallying up 12 penalties throughout regulation and two penalty shots for Kelowna (both saved by Beaupit). Chiefs defenseman Brayden Crampton and Rockets forward Mark Liwiski ended the first period with five-minute fighting majors. Later, gloves dropped just three and a half minutes into the third period when Kelowna forward Colton Dach slid into the boards in front of Jack Finley. Jake Poole didn't like that and took it up with Finley. Finley and Poole each received five-minute fighting majors, as well as a four-minute double minor to Finley for boarding and a two-minute minor to Poole for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Chiefs outshot the Rockets 39-37 and went 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs head home to host the Vancouver Giants for the first time since January 2020 on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
