Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Best Start Ever! Despite losing in a shootout on Saturday night to the Texas Wildcatters, the Gladiators continue their best start in team history with an 8-1-1 record. The Gladiators previous best start was 7-2-1 which was accomplished during the team's inaugural 2003-04 season and then matched during the 2005-06 season. Gwinnett went 6-1-3 over the first 10 games of the year during the 2006-07 season while posting a 5-2-3 record during the first 10 games of the 2004-05 season.
Streaking Along! Dirk Southern added an assist in Sunday's 5-4 shootout loss to Texas to push his point scoring streak to nine games. With the helper on Saturday night, Southern extended his point scoring streak to nine games as he holds the Gladiators season high for most consecutive games with at least one point. Southern's nine game point scoring streak ranks first in the league for most consecutive games with at least one point.
Fire Away! The Gladiators put up 63 shots on the Texas Wildcatters in Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss. Gwinnett's 63 shots is currently an ECHL season high for the year while the Gladiators 26 shots in the second period alone is also an ECHL season high. Both, though, aren't Gladiators highs for shots in a game or period. The Gladiators record for most shots in a game is 67 against Augusta on April 8th of 2005 while Gwinnett's 30 shots against Johnstown in the 3rd period on January 5th of 2007 set the team record for most shots in a period.
On the Plus Side: Defenseman Jim Jackson currently ranks second in the ECHL in plus-minus ranking on the season. Jackson currently has a +8 rating sharing second with four other players in the league behind Texas' Jonathan Paiement who ranks first with a +9 rating. In his three previous seasons with Gwinnett, Jackson has finished with a plus rating in the double digits. He finished with a +34 in 2003-04 while he was a +10 in 2004-05 and he posted a +23 with Gwinnett last year. Jackson's +75 all time with Gwinnett is a team record.
Jumping Right In: Forwards Colton Fretter and Chad Painchaud were both assigned to Gwinnett from the Chicago Wolves last week. Fretter and Painchaud both stepped right into the lineup as each posted a goal in Gwinnett's 6-4 win over Mississippi on Friday night. Painchaud's marker proved to be the game winner. Fretter added his second goal of the season for Gwinnett in the Gladiators 5-4 shootout loss to Texas on Saturday night.
Moving on Up: Jeff Campbell was called up to the Norfolk Admirlas of the AHL on Thursday. In the first eight games of the season with the Gladiators, Campbell led the team in scoring with 13 points and in assists with 11. He was also tied for third place in the ECHL in scoring. Campbell split time last season between the Gladiators and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. Campbell was held scoreless in his first game with the Admirals Friday night.
Trading Card Night: Friday, Novebmer 16th is the first Team Trading Card Night of the 2007-08 season. The first 2,000 fans at the game will score a free set of 5th Anniversary Gladiators Team Trading Cards courtesy of Champion's Car Wash, The Gwinnett Daily Post and WDUN, News Talk 550.
