Las Vegas, NV, January 23, 2006 - In preparation for their season opener on Friday, January 27, the Las Vegas Gladiators trimmed its roster for the 2006 Arena Football League season to below the league limit by waiving nine players, releasing two players, trading a player and placing six on Injured Reserve.
The 2005 Gladiators roster is composed of 12 AFL veterans and 8 AFL rookies and features 10 players returning from the 2005 team.
The roster breakdown by position follows (returning players in bold): Kicker (1) - Eric Houle; Quarterback (2) - Jason Fife, Craig Whelihan; Offensive Specialist (1) - Marcus Nash; FB/LB (3) - Rodney Filer, Marlion Jackson, Matt Kinsinger; WR/DB (2) - Anthony Arceneaux, Dameon Porter; WR/LB (2) - Coco Blalock, Kevin Prentiss; Defensive Specialists (2) - Nick Davis Nick Davis, TJ Hill,; OL/DL (7) - Wilky Bazile, Rob Gatrell, William Mayes, Chukie Nwokorie, Tupe Peko, Alonzo Spellman, Tyshaun Whitson.
To get down below the AFL roster limit, the Gladiators waived OL/DL Oby Arah, DS Charles Byrd, OL/DL Nate Grace, QB Brian Jones, DS Ronnie Kaymore, FB/LB Lavell Mann, DS Traco Rachal, OS Jerome Riley, and DS Antuan Simmons.
Las Vegas also made a deal with the Columbus Destroyers, sending kicker Mark Lewis to Columbus for Future Considerations.
They also released WR/LB Maurice Bryant and FB/LB Desmond Byrd.
In addition, WR/LB Joe Douglass, OL/DL Steve Konopka, OL/DL Paul LaQuerre, WR/LB Junior Lord, WR/DB Ivory McCann and DS Kevin Williams were placed on IR.
The Gladiators will also have a four-man practice squad, but a player must clear waivers before being signed to the practice squad.
The Gladiators open the 2006 campaign this Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, on the road at the Austin Wranglers. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PST and can be heard on ESPN Radio 920 in Las Vegas with Andrew Siciliano and Mike Pritchard back to handle the call.
The Gladiators first home game will be a Monday Night Football contest against the San Jose SaberCats, Feb. 6 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
