Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- With their season opener rapidly approaching, the Los Angeles Avengers waived six players and placed eight on the injured reserve list, trimming their active roster to the game-day limit of 20, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.

The Avengers will kick off their seventh season in the 20-year-old Arena Football League on Sunday, Jan. 29, versus the Arizona Rattlers at STAPLES Center. Kickoff is set for noon (Pacific) and the contest will be televised live on KNBC Channel 4.

The six players waived by Los Angeles are: defensive specialist Walter Bernard, wide receiver/defensive back Tramissian Davis, offensive/defensive lineman Marc Manfredda, offensive/defensive Furnell Hankton, offensive/defensive Michael Rogers and defensive specialist Jermaine Smith.

The eight Avengers who will spend at least the first two weeks of the 2006 season on the injured reserve list are: wide receiver/defensive back Antoine Burns, offensive/defensive lineman Jemelle Cage, quarterback Sonny Cumbie, offensive/defensive lineman Charles Howard, offensive specialist Tony Locke, offensive/defensive lineman Rod Manuel, offensive/defensive lineman Richard Seals and wide receiver/defensive back Ricky Sharpe.

Locke, who started 12 games at offensive specialist for the Avengers last season and led the team in receiving yards (1,182) and touchdowns (27), has an injured left hand. His spot in the lineup will be filled by rookie Kareem Kelly, who set several receiving records during his collegiate career at USC.

The Avengers went 10-6 last season and captured their first AFL Western Division championship. Los Angeles led the AFL in scoring percentage (74.4 percent) and qualified for the ArenaBowl Playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

Nine-game season ticket packages, which start at $94.50, are on sale now at 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com. Single-game tickets may be purchased at the STAPLES Center box office, at all Ticketmaster locations, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com and by calling 213-480-3232.
