Nashville Kats News Release

NASHVILLE (Jan. 23, 2006) - The Nashville Kats have set their active roster at 23 players for their season opener at New York later this week, placing DS Chris Angel, FB/LB Rupert Grant and OL/DL Ronald Jones on injured reserve.

The moves bring the team in one player shy of the 24-player maximum a team is allowed to carry on its active roster during the regular season. All AFL teams must set their rosters today, according to league rules.

The three players moved to injured reserve will miss at least the first two games of the regular season. Angel and Grant are out with knee injuries, while Jones is recovering from a bruised elbow. None of the injuries are expected to keep the players out for an extended period of time.

The moves came just two days after Nashville released quarterback Scott Rislov and lineman Wes Stephens. Rislov served as the backup quarterback for the last few games of the 2005 season, seeing his only action in the second half of the season finale against Chicago. Stephens, who has battled injuries the last few seasons, was waived-injured after hyperextending his elbow in training camp.

Those moves, along with the restructuring of several players' contracts enabled Nashville to keep quarterbacks Leon Murray and Clint Stoerner. Murray was Nashville's starter last season, while Stoerner was an AFL All-Rookie choice with Dallas in 2005. Stoerner, who sat out the last week of practice with pulled muscles in his rib cage, returned to practice today.

The Kats open the season on Saturday against the New York Dragons, the defending Eastern Division champions. The game will be carried live on Nashville's WUXP (UPN 30) and on the radio on WKDF (103.3 FM). The team opens its home schedule on Fri., Feb. 3 against Columbus.
