Gladiators Fall To Wildcatters 2-1 In OT
April 20, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators pushed the Texas Wildcatters to the brink for two consecutive games but couldn't push their season to another game as they dropped a 2-1 overtime decision in Game 4 of the Division Semi-Finals. Gwinnett loses the best of 5 series 3-games-to-1. Texas will now face the Florida Everblades in the ECHL South Division Semi-Finals
Ben Thompson posted the game-winning goal with just 29 seconds left in overtime ripping a shot over the shoulder of Gladiators netminder Dave Caruso as Thompson walked off the right wing boards and ripped a shot over the shoulder of the netmdiner for the goal. Oliver Proulx and Paul Albers collected the assists on the overtime game winner for the Wildcatters.
The teams skated to a scoreless tie through the first period as the Wildcatters outshot the Gladiators 14-5 in the period. Gwinnett also killed off a critical 5-on-3 Texas power play to keep the game scoreless.
In the second, the teams continued to play defensively as the contest remained scoreless through two periods. The hitting and physical play increased in the period as the Wildcatters again out shot Gwinnett posting an 11-8 advantage in the middle period.
Texas took the first lead of the game jumping on top of the Gladiators on the power play in the third as they took a 1-0 lead. With Matt York sitting in the box for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Kevin Baker walked across the blue line and ripped a snap shot over the shoulder of Caruso for the goal. JF David and Brandin Cote collected the assists on the power play goal for the Wildcatters.
Andy Contois tied the game up at 1-1 with his first goal of the playoffs with just 3:58 left in the third period. Mike Vigilante and Chad Painchaud hooked up to spring Contois on a breakaway as they moved the puck up through the neutral zone. Contois beat Texas netminder Danny Taylor over the shoulder for the marker but Gwinnett could not get anymore in the loss.
Caruso finished with 48 saves for the Gladiators in the loss as Gwinnett was out shot by a 50-39 margin in the contest. Gwinnett was held scoreless on the power play in the defeat as Texas posted their first goal of the game on the man advantage.
