Gladiators Fall to Stingrays in 3-2 in Shootout

Jeff Campbell pushed his point scoring streak to 14 games while Gwinnett took the Stingrays to 13 rounds in a shootout before losing to South Carolina 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum. Gwinnett falls to 19-7-3 on the year with the shootout loss but remain in second place in the ECHL's South Division with 41 points.

Jeff Mason got the Gladiators on the board first just 3:36 into the first period. Mason ripped a on-time slapshot past Stingrays' netminer Josh Johnson for the marker. Mike Hamilton set up Mason's second goal of the season feeding the defenseman at the point for the one-timer. Andy Brandt also had an assist on the power play goal for Gwinnett.

Gwinnett took a 2-0 lead in the second period on Campbell's seventh goal of the season. Campbell walked untouched on the power play inTO the slot and ripped a snap shot past Johnson for the marker just 4:32 into the second period. Jamie Milam and Bryson Busniuk posted the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett.

South Carolina got on the board just 1:57 into the third period as Matt Scherer beat Gladiators netminder Dan Turple on a 2-on-1 break beating the netminder with a snapshot from the right wing circle. Pierre- Luc O'Brien and Derrick Byfuglien had the assists on the goal for the Stingrays.

Cail MacLean tied the game at 2-2 with a shorthanded goal at 14:32 of the third period. Digging the puck off the wall, Matt Reid fed MacLean in the slot to set up the marker. Nate Kiser also had an assist on the goal for the Stingrays in third period. The goal pushed the game to overtime and eventually a shootout as the teams skated to a scoreless overtime period.

In the shootout, it took 13th rounds to find a winner before Chris Chaput beat Turple for the game winner. Lou Dickenson and Travis Morin exchanged shootout goals in the third and fourth rounds respectively pushing the game to extra shootout rounds before the Stingrays posted the win.

Turple finished with 28 saves for the Gladiators in the shootout loss while Gwinnett went 2-for-5 on the power play in the contest. Gwinnett held the Stingrays off the board on five power play chances in the shootout loss.

The Gladiators continue their fifth anniversary season on Wednesday, January 2nd as they travel to Columbia to take on the Inferno at 1:05 p.m. at the Carolina Coliseum. Catch all the play-by-play action in Sunday's game online via AccessNorthGa.com on Access raiod streamming channel 3.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
