Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
The Victoria Salmon Kings continued their post-Christmas three games in three night California road trip with the first of back-to-back meetings against the Fresno Falcons on Saturday night.
The first period did not have a lot of flow as the play seemed a little disjointed at times. Fresno was able to hem the Kings in their own zone on a couple of occasions and eventually were able to capitalize. Kenny MacAulay pulled a puck off the left sideboards and hit Falcons' sniper Oren Eizenman who moved into the slot and snapped a shot past Victoria goalie Julien Ellis. The Falcons led 1-0 after the first period.
The second period started off with a better flow to it, and the Salmon Kings appeared to tie the game in the period's first few minutes when Derek Krestanovich roofed a shot past Falcons' goaltender Jake Moreland, but there was no goal call and Fresno remained up 1-0. The Kings capitalized moments later on the power play when Ryan Wade blasted a point shot past the Falcons' goalie. Fresno would regain the lead when Jarrett Konkle scored in the period's final minutes. Fresno led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
The third period started with a bang as Ash Goldie tied the game up at 2-2 just over a minute in. John Morlang was the benefactor of a pretty pass from Eizenman to put Fresno up 3-2 with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Paul Ballantyne tied the affair at 3-3 when he popped the puck past a down and out Moreland with less than four minutes remaining. That's how the period and overtime would end. A shootout was necessary. After trading three shootout goals each through nine rounds, Ellis stopped Pierre-Olivier Beaulieu on Fresno's 10th chance. Dylan Yeo came out as the King's 10th shooter and beat Moreland on the blocker side for the 4-3 Kings' victory.
Salmon Kings were 1/8=12.5% on the power play and the Falcons were 1/5=20%. Victoria outshot Fresno 35-33.
Victoria and Fresno finish off these back-to-back games tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. The King's return to the friendly confines of the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre next week for a three game set versus the Utah Grizzlies. The first game goes on Thursday, January 3rd at 7:05 p.m. Get your tickets today by phoning 220-7889.
