Gladiators Come Back, Beat Stingrays, 4-3 in OT

The Gwinnett Gladiators used a power play goal by Jeff Campbell 1:50 into overtime to beat the South Carolina Stingrays 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center to improve to 42-11-7 on the season tying a team record for most wins in a sesaon.

Campbell scooped up a rebound in the slot and bachanded the puck into the empty net as South Carolina netminder Davis Parley was sprawled out on the ice making the initial save on Jon Awe's slap shot from the point. Brad Shell had his third assist of the game on the goal for Gwinnett.

Gwinnett opened up a 1-0 lead on Jon Awe's 10th goal of the season. Brad Schell won an offensive zone draw right to Awe at the point where the defenseman then ripped a slap shot past Stingrays netminder Davis Parley at 6:24 of the first period.

In the second period, South Carolina equalized the contest at a goal apiece. Robin Gomez ripped a snap shot to the far post past Gladiators netminder Sean Fields for the tally 8:44 into the second period. Ryan Finnerty collected an assist on the goal winning an offensive zone draw right to Gomez to set up the tally.

Awe's second of the game gave Gwinnett a 2-1 lead 5:31 into the third period ripping his second slap shot past Parley for the goal. Brad Schell and Jeff Campbell collected the assists on the marker.

South Carolina picked up the next two goals, their second of the final period coming with 3:39 left in regulation, to take a 3-2 lead. Craig Olynick equalized the game at two with a goal on a 5-on-3 power play ripping a slap shot past Fields from the point.

Anders Strome finished a tic-tac-toe play for the Stingrays for the go-ahead goal late in the third period off a feed from Jeff Legue. Ty Morris also picked up an assist on the south Carolina goal at 16:21 of the final period.

Guillaume Desbiens tied the game up for Gwinnett with just 33 seconds left in regulation taking an outlet pass at the red line from Jeff Campbell and muscling down the right wing side before sliding the puck past Parley for the tying tally. Jon Awe also added an assist on the goal for Gwinnett as he whipped the puck around the boards to a waiting Campbell. Campbell's assist was his 74th point of the season, setting a new team record for most points in a season.

Sean Fields recorded his 27th win of the season making 20 saves for Gwinnett while the Gladiators picked up one goal on the power play, the overtime game winner, for the fifth consecutive game with at least one power play goal.
