Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., - Lance Monych of the Stockton Thunder recorded a hat trick as the Bakersfield Condors dropped a 5-1 contest in front of 5,836 fans at the Rabobank Arena.
The Condors and Thunder went shot-for-shot for most of the first period until a Stockton power play late in the frame. Geno Parrish worked the puck from the far point and fed Lance Monych on the weak side. Monych wristed the puck into the open net with goaltender Marty Magers caught on the opposite post to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead with 3:40 remaining in the period.
Lance Monych notched his second goal of the game on an odd-man rush with Maris Ziedens. Monych quickly lifted the feed from Ziedens past Magers to double Stockton's lead at 2-0.
The Condors answered back four minutes later on the power play when Dave Bonk battled in front of the net for a shot on Stockton netminder Jake Moreland. A rebound off a Bonk shot trailed to Mathieu Brunelle at the near post, who pushed it past Moreland to put Bakersfield on the scoreboard. Scott Balan assisted as Bakersfield cut Stockton's lead to 2-1.
Jeff Lang responded with a power play goal as he fired a slap shot from the center of the blue line and past the right side of Magers. Mike Lalonde and Maris Ziedens received assists as Stockton took a 3- 1 lead.
On the penalty kill, Joel Irwin created a turnover at the Condors blue line and led a shorthanded odd- man rush. Irwin tapped the puck to Kevin Gardner, who sneaked a backhander through the legs of Magers to give Stockton a 4-1 lead heading into the third period.
Monych capitalized his evening with a power play goal in the third period when Joel Irwin fed him a pass in front of the crease. Geno Parrish assisted as Monych recorded Stockton's first-ever hat trickand pushed the Thunder lead to 5-1.
Jake Moreland earned the win, stopping 42 of 43 Condor shots. Marty Magers was credited with the loss despite making 27 saves on 32 shots.
Other notes: Bakersfield remains a win away from clinching a Kelly Cup Playoff spot.
For the record: The Condors fall to 29- 22-5 on the season with 63 points. They trail second place Long Beach by seven points following the Ice Dogs' 3-2 victory over San Diego tonight.
