SAN DIEGO - In their final meeting of the regular season, the San Diego Gulls defeated the Fresno Falcons 2-1 in a shootout at ipayOne Center.

Fresno's Pete Fregoe scored the only goal of the first period when he one-timed a feed into the slot from J.F. Plourde for his 14th of the season at 9:34. Luke Curtin picked-up the secondary assist on the play, extending his team season-high point streak to 13 straight games (4g-16a) dating back to Feb. 11.

The Gulls' Kelly Askew tied the game mid-way through the second when he kept the puck himself skating on a two-on-one and beat Falcons goaltender Brett Jaeger to the blocker side at 12:59.

Tied at one entering the third, the teams held the status quo into overtime, where Fresno was awarded a power play. They peppered Tyler Weiman with several chances on the man advantage, but the San Diego goaltender held the fort to force the shootout.

Fresno trailed in the shootout 2-1 entering the fifth round when head coach Matt Thomas tabbed defenseman Shawn Weiman to try to keep the team alive. The Falcons d-man failed in his attempt to beat his younger cousin to the blocker side, and the Gulls secured the shootout win.

The shootout effort keeps Fresno unbeaten against Pacific Division foes this season at 18-0-5. Overall, the team is 35-11-12 with 82 points, 10 points ahead of the second place Long Beach Ice Dogs, which defeated Bakersfield this evening 3-2 in regulation.

The Falcons and Ice Dogs play the first of three in a row against one another on Wednesday at Long Beach Arena. The game can be heard live beginning 6:45 p.m. with the FutureTek Pre-game Show on 1550 Sporting News Radio.
