Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx rallied to force overtime against the Pensacola Ice Pilots Sunday afternoon, but couldn't come out with the win as Pensacola grabbed a 5-4 shootout win at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
Nicolas Corbeil's game-tying goal came with just 44 seconds remaining in regulation time and goaltender Nathan Marsters on the bench for an extra attacker. Anthony Battaglia and Brian Passmore worked the puck down low before Corbeil swooped in and picked up a loose puck in front of Pensacola goaltender David Cann, roofing a wrister past his right shoulder to push the game to overtime.
No scoring in overtime led to the shootout, where Augusta (25-29-5) hit the post once and missed twice while Pensacola (20-36-3) scored on three of four attempts for the win.
Jan Steber opened the scoring for Pensacola just 1:14 into the game, but Ryan Lang's shorthanded tally evened things at a goal apiece. Lang's long shot from outside the Ice Pilots zone was tipped by a defenseman and dove under the crossbar at 9:49. Then Sean Stefanski picked up a nifty pass in front from Anthony Battaglia to give the Lynx a 2-1 lead at 18:35.
Second period action saw Pensacola score twice on markers from Nate Metcalfe and Steven Later just 1:27 apart for a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Chris Leinweber scored at 4:52 off a Brian Passmore feed to even the game, but Steber's second goal of the night gave Pensacola the lead right back just 38 seconds later.
Nathan Marsters took the loss for Augusta in his first start on assignment from the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates, while Cann earned his second win of the week against Augusta with 29 saves. The Lynx finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play while Pensacola went 0-for-7 with the man advantage.
The Lynx are back in action Wednesday night in Charlotte before returning home Friday and Saturday to battle the Florida Everblades at 7:35 pm. Augusta will finish the week back in Charlotte with a Sunday matinee game at 5:05 pm.
Tickets are on sale now for all remaining Lynx home games as well as playoff packages too by calling the team office at (706) 724-4ICE, or at all TicketMaster locations and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
