Idaho Steelheads News Release
Anchorage, Alaska - Three goals in a 3:09 span late in regulation lifted the Alaska Aces to a 3-1 victory over the Steelheads at Sullivan Arena on Saturday night.
Aces' forward Justin Maiser picked up the game-winning goal with 7:55 remaining in regulation, and he added an assist on the Aces third goal, as the Steelheads (33-19-7) were looking to send the Aces (46-9-4) packing in back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Steelheads are now 2-3-0 against the Aces this season.
Late in the first period, Kurt MacSweyn gave the Steelheads a 1-0 advantage with a power play goal at 19:42. Forwards Scott Burt and Dan Hacker cycled the puck down low, as MacSweyn freed himself up at the side of the Aces' net. Burt then walked out from the right wing corner and fed the puck across the crease to MacSweyn who tipped it into the net for his fifth goal of the season and his second of the series.
MacSweyn's goal was the only marker in the first period, as the Steelheads scored the game's first goal for the 36th time this season. The Steelheads out-shot the Aces 7-6 in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period. After 40 minutes of play, the shots were 18-15 in favor of the Aces.
Former Steelheads' defenseman Peter Metcalf tied the game with an even-strength goal at 11:30 of the third period. Vladimir Novak raced into the Steelheads' zone along the right wing side and fed the puck out into the slot into a slew of bodies. Metcalf found the loose disc and flipped it over goaltender Matt Yeats (29 saves) to tie the match at one.
Maiser tallied just 35 seconds later to give the Aces their first lead. Then defenseman Patrick Wellar rounded out the scoring with his fifth of the year at 14:39 of the third stanza. Kimbi Daniels and Maiser set up the power play goal.
For the match, the Aces out-shot the Steelheads 32-18. Matt Underhill earned his 30th win, stopping 17 shots. Yeats fell to 16-7-4 and 0-3-0 against the Aces.
This three-game series wraps up on Sunday, March 12. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
