March 18, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gwinnett Gladiators knocked off the Charlotte Checkers 4-3 on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center to set a new franchise record for both most wins in a season with their 43rd as well as most points in a season with 92 on the year.

Cam Brown gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead with his 7th goal of the season. Brown found a loose puck in the slot and jammed it past Charlotte netminder Jeff Glass just 1:50 into the first. Rick Emmett collected an assist on the goal for the Gladiators.

Gwinnett pushed its lead to two goals on Brad Schell's power play goal 11:51 into the first period. Schell ripped a slap shot past Glass from the high slot off a feed from Jon Awe for the marker. Derek Nesbitt also collected an assist on the goal for the Gladiators.

In the second, Matt York gave Gwinnett a 3-0 lead with his 8th goal of the season. Intercepting a Checkers outlet pass in the slot, York capitalized on the turn over, whipping the puck past Glass for the unassisted goal.

Peter Worrell broke the Gwinnett shutout by finishing a 2-on-1 break, beating Fields to the short side for the goal. Kris MacPhee picked up an assist on the Checkers' league-leading 18th shorthanded goal of the year. The goal came just 62 second after York's unassisted tally.

Adam Smyth gave the Gladiators the three goal advantage back with what proved to be the game winner at the 11:07 mark of the second period. Smyth moved in on a 2-on-1 break with Joel Stepp, but used Stepp as a decoy in the slot and beat a cheating Glass to the short side. Scott Mifsud and Emmett collected the assists on the goal, moving the puck up ice to Smyth to set up the goal.

Charlotte cut the lead back to two goals with a power play marker by Mike Bayrack before the end of the second period. Brandon Cullen and Jake Ortmeyer collected the assists on the goal at 14:56 of the second.

Charlotte looked to get back into contest late in the third as they were down by two goals and pulled Glass for the extra attacker. Charlotte capitalized with 33 seconds left in the third on a tally by Daniel Sparre. Juris Stals and Peter Worrell collected the assists on the goal but the Checkers could get no closer in the final seconds.

Gwinnett and Charlotte each collected one goal on the power play as Gwinnett outshot the Checkers by a 38-15 margin. It was the second time this season that the Gladiators kept their opponent to 15 or fewer shots this year.

The Gwinnett Gladiators, who have already clinched a playoff berth, continue the 2005-06 ECHL season on the road as they travel to Charlotte to take on the Checkers at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22nd.
