March 18, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Veteran forward Marty Flichel registered one goal and two assists, while rookie Mike Adamek notched the game-winner in the first period, as the Steelheads defeated the Stockton Thunder, 4-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 5,203 from Qwest Arena on Saturday night.
The Steelheads (37-20-7) have won four straight overall and six in a row on home ice, as they complete their four-game week with an unblemished mark of 4-0-0.
Flichel scored the game's first goal at 8:20 of the first period, smacking home a rebound for and even-strength goal, his 25th of the season. Captain D'Arcy McConvey, who took the initial shot, drew one assist and defenseman Jeremy Mylymok got the other helper.
At 12:11 of the first stanza, rookie Mike Adamek scored his second professional goal to give the Steelheads a 2-0 advantage. Adamek worked his way out from the far corner and faked a shot, before moving to the outside of the crease and beating Thunder goaltender Jeff Weber (32 saves) just inside the far post. Fellow rookie Kurt MacSweyn recorded the only assist on Adamek's third point in just seven ECHL games and his first professional game-winning tally.
Late in the opening period, Paul Caponigri got his second goal in the last two games, and his 12th of the season to make the score 3-0. Flichel added the primary assist and defenseman Tyler Kindle got the other assist.
There was no scoring in the second period. Through two periods, the Steelheads were out-shooting the Thunder, 26-15.
The two sides traded goals in the third period, as the Thunder (11-37-13) avoided the shutout with Jeff Lang's fifth of the year at 3:09. His wrist shot from the slot eluded Steve Silverthorn (24 saves) to make the score 3-1. Lang's marker was the first goal the Steelheads allowed in 112:51, dating back to Wednesday's win over the Thunder.
McConvey then added a power play goal at 7:46 of the stanza to increase the lead to 4-1. David Bararuk and Flichel assisted on his 30th of the season.
The final shots were 36-25 in favor of the victors, as the Steelheads sweep the season series from the Thunder at a perfect 5-0-0.
The Steelheads open their final regular-season home series on Wednesday, March 22, as the Fresno Falcons visit Qwest Arena. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
