Germain, Lenes Haunt Titans in 3-2 Wheeling Win
January 26, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
TRENTON, NJ- The Wheeling Nailers visited the Trenton Titans on Saturday night, and were able to escape with the victory, thanks to some help from a few former Titans. Matt Germain lit the lamp twice, and Peter Lenes broke a tie with 3:49 to go, as the Nailers defeated the Titans, 3-2, at Sun National Bank Center. Peter Delmas made 41 saves in the triumph.
Six minutes into the contest, the Nailers drew first blood, and it was a former Titan, who provided the damage. Matt Germain took a pass from Peter Child, and raced up the left side of the ice. Once he reached the face-off circle, Germain snapped a wrist shot on goal, beating Cal Heeter high over the glove. Child picked up the lead assist, while Peter Delmas also notched an assist - his third of the season.
Wheeling nearly took a two-goal lead in the latter half of the second period, when a turnover by Cal Heeter led to an opportunity in front of the net. The Nailers knocked the puck into the cage, but the goal was disallowed, due to a kicking motion. The Titans took that chance to even the score with 2:52 to go. Peter Child did a phemomenal job, blocking a shot in the right circle, preventing a goal for a moment. However, Trenton continued to buzz, and Bryan Haczyk set up Mike Ullrich at the bottom of the left circle for the equalizer.
A little more than seven minutes into the third period, the Nailers retook the lead. Matt Germain picked up the puck at his own blueline, dashed the other way, and pumped a slap shot over Heeter's glove. The Trenton backstop was ejected after the play, but his team responded with the equalizer, nine seconds later, as Jacob Drewiske finished a 2-on-1 rush with a wrist shot from the right circle. The score remained tied until 3:49 showed on the clock, when Chris Barton tossed a pass through the slot to Peter Lenes, who lifted a backhander up and over Scott Wedgewood's glove for a 3-2 Wheeling lead, and ultimately a victory.
Peter Delmas was magnificent in goal for the Nailers, stopping 42 of the 44 shots he faced for the win. Scott Wedgewood took the loss, making four saves on five shots, in relief of Cal Heeter, who turned away 23 of 25 shots.
The Nailers play host to the Cincinnati Cyclones at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon.
