Late Goal Dooms Titans at Home; Fall to Wheeling, 3-2
January 26, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, lost to the Wheeling Nailers Saturday night, 3-2, at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.
Wheeling (20-14-3-5, 48 pts) got the jump on the Titans with an early goal from Matt Germain, who beat Cal Heeter over the left shoulder at the 6:00 mark for the only goal of the opening period.
Trenton (17-18-3-3, 40 pts) kept pace in the second with an equalizer from Matt Ullrich, who buried a feed from Brian Haczyk at 17:08, with Wheeling netminder Peter Delmas (8-4-0-2, 42 saves) caught out of position. Eric Baier, back with the Titans after a stint with the Providence Bruins, also earned an assist on Ullrich's third of the season, and second in two games.
The Nailers continued to hammer away in the third, and 7:02 into the period Matt Germain again put his club up by one with an almost identical shot past Heeter - this one on a breakaway. After the play, Heeter was assessed a game misconduct on an unsportsmanlike penalty and was replaced by Scott Wedgewood. Heeter made 23 saves and did not earn a decision in his first regular-season ECHL start after being assigned to Trenton from the Adirondack Phantoms earlier this week.
Jacob Drewiske was able to pull the Titans back to even just nine seconds the Germain goal with a blast from the top of the right circle at 7:11. Baier and Haczyk both earned their second helpers of the game on Drewiske's ninth tally of the season.
Peter Lenes finally got the best of Wedgewood (13-13-2-1, 4 saves) on a two-on-one with 3:49 remaining to put the Nailers up for good, 3-2. Trenton outshot Wheeling, 44-30, including holding a 16-8 advantage in the third period. Neither team was able to cash in on their power play opportunities, Trenton going 0-for-3 and Wheeling 0-for-4.
The Titans will now head to Elmira for a Sunday afternoon showdown with the division rival Jackals tomorrow at 4:05 pm - the first of a four game road trip. The team will continue on for games with the Florida Everblades Wednesday and Friday (both 7:30 pm) and the Orlando SolarBears Saturday February. 2nd at 7:00 pm. The Titans return to Trenton on February 6th for a battle with the Gwinnet Gladiators at 7:05 pm. As always, those games can be heard on the home of the Titans 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com with the voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos.
