
Generals defeat Checkers 3-1

GREENSBORO, NC - The Greensboro Generals defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-1 tonight at the Greensboro Coliseum, moving them into a second place tie with the Richmond Renegades. In front of 3,680 fans on hand, Generals Captain Jay Murphy recorded all three goals for his second hat trick of the season. The win moves the Generals streak to 7-1-1 over their last nine games played, and improves their overall record to 15-6-4.
The scoring onslaught began in the first period with the Generals jumping out to an early 1-0 lead when Murphy scored at the 6:55 mark, on an unassisted goal. Murphy would convert on the power-play on a rebound of a Sam Ftorek shot to increase the margin to 2-0. Dusty Jamieson scored the Checkers only goal of the game at the 16:19 point of the first period, making the game 2-1 at the end of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, the Generals would put the game away when Murphy added an empty net goal with 37 seconds remaining. The victory was the third for Jamie Hodson, moving his record to 3-3-1 on the season. Hodson stopped 29 shots en route to the victory before leaving the game due to a minor injury with less than ten minutes remaining in the game. Daniel Berthiaume stepped into the crease and made six saves down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Generals host the the defending Kelly Cup Champion Greenville Grrrowl tomorrow night at 7:30. Friday night at 7:30 is Pizza Hut "Guaranteed Win Night" at the Coliseum. If the Generals win on tomorrow, everyone in the building will receive a free personal pan pizza courtesy of Pizza Hut.
