Dayton Gems News Release
In what was the first of three-games in three-nights on the road for the Gems, they lost to the Evansville IceMen by the final score of 6-4. The Gems had a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by Ernie Stewart, but Evansville's offense erupted for four second period goals. Stewart would add his second of the night to cut the lead to 4-2 after two periods of play. Paul Ferraro made it 4-3 with an unassisted power play goal, but 35 seconds later the IceMen pushed the lead back to two. Tim Hartung cut it back down to one to make it 5-4 with plenty of time left in regulation, but with Gems starter Jeff Jakaitis on the bench, Jeff Nelson found an empty net to give the IceMen the 6-4 decision. The Gems power play was strong on Friday, going 2-5 and for the second time this season, the Gems out shot their opponent (38-34) and ended up with a loss.
Week in Review: (Saturday, 11-20-10)
Trying to bounce back after losing to Evansville the night before, the Gems were looking for another road victory and to improve their record against the Fort Wayne Komets to 2-0 on the season. Jeff Jakaitis got his second consecutive start in net and was outstanding, especially in the first and third periods stopping all 30 shots in those periods and 39 of 40 on the night. Bobby Phillips broke a scoreless tie in the second period and gave the Komets a 1-0 lead heading into the third. Rookie (and leading scorer) Erik Boisvert tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at the 8:17 mark, then just under six minutes later, Kyle Bochek recorded his second goal of the season at the 14:09 mark to give the Gems a 2-1 lead. The penalty kill came up big and killed off all four remaining chances the Komets had to help preserve the 2-1 victory. In the two wins against the Komets this season, Gems goaltenders Jeff Jakaitis and Derek MacIntyre have now combined to stop 83 of 85 shots on goal (.976 save %).
Week in Review: (Sunday, 11-21-10)
Derek MacIntyre would get the nod to start in goal in this one and matchup against his counterpart Adam Russo. Just 22 seconds into the opening period, Tim Hartung pounced on a rebound to give the Gems an early 1-0 lead. Former Gem and current Mallards defenseman Adam Maccarone tied the game at 1-1 with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line at the 5:10 mark. Then later in the first, Maccarone tallied his second of the season (and of the period) to give Quad City a short-lived 2-1 lead. Corey Couturier answered right back for the Gems and tied the game at 2-2 at the 19:07 mark. Former Mallard and current Gem Chris Lipsett gave the Gems a 3-2 lead in the second period when he bounced in a deflection behind Russo at the 9:54 mark. Eric Giosa responded with a game-tying goal of his own when he beat MacIntyre through the five-hole on a breakaway caused by a Gems turnover. Then less than two minutes after that, Tyler Shelast broke the tie and made it 4-3 with a power play goal. Mike McLean bumped the lead up to 5-3 with a power play goal just 18 seconds into the third period. Tom Boudreau cut the lead down to one again with his first of the season at the 2:25 mark, but McLean put the game away at the 9:15 mark with his second of the night (again on the power play) to seal the fate of the Gems and a 6-4 Dayton defeat.
Dayton Gems Weekly Notes
PENALTIES ARE PUNISHING US: The Gems have yielded 18 goals against in 13 games this season for their opponents' power play, only killing off 58-76 opportunities which have them at the lowest percentage in the CHL (76%). Opposing teams have scored at least one power play goal in eight straight games against the Gems penalty kill and in three of those eight games, teams have scored two power play goals against. The Gems also allowed three power play goals on the road for the first time this season in Sunday's 6-4 loss in Quad City.
BACK AND FORTH THEY GO: In four out of the last five games the Gems have played, they have exchanged the lead or tied the game with their opponents 15 times. There were five lead changes or ties in the Quad City game (11-21-10), one at Fort Wayne (11-20-10), four at Evansville (11-19-10) and six against Arizona (11-12-10). The only recent game that did not involve a lead being exchanged was the Gems 2-1 win at Evansville on November 13th.
HEAT CHECK FOR HARTUNG: Returning from last year's Dayton Gems team, forward Tim Hartung has found his game this season, after not recording any points in the Gems first seven games (four games playing in, three scratched) he has now recorded nine points (5G 4A) in his last five games and is averaging a point per game with his nine points in nine games played.
FIRST ON THE BOARD: The Gems success this season could be associated with their ability to get the first goal up on the board. They are 6-2-0 when scoring the first goal of the game, 5-1-1 when scoring the first goal of the second period and 5-2-0 when scoring the first goal in the third period. The Gems also know how to hang onto the lead this season they are 3-1-0 when leading after the first period and an impressive 5-0-1 when having the lead after two periods of play.
HOLIDAY HOME COOKING: After playing their last four games on the road (2-2 record), the Gems return home this week for a couple of Holiday weekend games. The first of which takes place this Thursday, November 25th (Thanksgiving Night) against the Evansville IceMen at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, November 27th the Gems take on the Bloomington PrairieThunder at 7:30 p.m. Thursday's game will feature FREE PARKING for ALL fans that night and fans that choose to bring in a canned food item for the Gems annual Canned Food Drive will receive a special $8.00 ticket price.
