Arizona Sundogs News Release


The Arizona Sundogs (5-7-2) closed out a season-long eight-game road trip winning their third straight with a 2-1 victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder on Sunday. With the win, the Sundogs have earned points in five straight contests and sit in a tie for fifth place in the Berry Conference with the Mississippi RiverKings with 12 points.

On Sunday, Levente Szuper made 31 saves and Luke Erickson picked up his fifth point in three games since joining Arizona as the Sundogs with a 2-1 win over Bloomington, their second win over the PrairieThunder in five days.

On Friday, Erickson, Kyle Hood and Cam Keith combined for eight points and Szuper won his second consecutive decision as the Sundogs topped the Fort Wayne Komets, 3-2.

The Sundogs needed overtime for the third time in as many games and a shootout for the second time in three contests to snap an eight-game winless streak on Wednesday, topping the PrairieThunder, 3-2. Erickson, in his first game with the Sundogs, collected an assist and the eventual game-winner in the shootout's seventh round. Szuper picked up his first win as a Sundog, stopping 41 of 43 shots and six of seven skaters in the shootout.

Arizona returns to Prescott Valley for a three-game set against the league's best team in the Allen Americans beginning Wednesday at 7:05pm (Arizona time). Sundogs Storylines:

- After starting the season 2-1-0, the Sundogs were winless in eight straight games (0-6-2) before snapping the slide with a 3-2 shootout win over the Bloomington PrairieThunder on 11/17. Arizona has now won three straight and has earned points in its last five contests.

- The Sundogs have earned 10 of their 12 points on the road this season. Arizona is just 1-3-0 at home but owns a 4-4-2 record away from Tim's Toyota Center. Arizona closed out a season-long eight-game road trip Sunday against Bloomington, with their third straight win and points in five straight. The Sundogs return home for three contests against the Allen Americans then head back on the road for six straight away from home. After their next trip, the Sundogs will have played just seven games at home compared to 16 away from Prescott Valley.

- Acquired in a trade with the Rapid City Rush on 11/12, forward Luke Erickson has tallied three goals, two assists and two game-winners in three games with the Sundogs. Erickson is averaging a point per game this season with nine points (5g/4a) in nine games.

- Sundogs goaltender Levente Szuper (3-1-1) ranks second in the CHL among goaltenders with a .933 save percentage and eighth among league netminders in goals against average (2.33) through his first five games. Szuper started the season with a loss but has won three straight and has earned points in his last four starts.

- Arizona currently has three former Rush players on its roster. The team picked up defenseman John Wessbecker after a pair of preseason contests against the Rush, traded for Erickson on 11/12 and claimed defenseman Corey Laurysen off waivers on 11/19. Laurysen collected an assist in his first game with Arizona, a 3-2 win over Fort Wayne on 11/19.

- Arizona is winless (0-3-0) against divisional opponents but sports a 5-4-2 record against Turner Conference opponents.

- After surrendering 11 goals first-period goals in their first nine games to start the season, the Sundogs have held their opponents scoreless in the first period in five straight contests.

- Arizona leads the league in minor penalties with 124.

- Arizona's power-play unit has scored just 12 goals on 102 opportunities clicking at 11.8% and ranking last in the league. The Sundogs have given up two shorthanded goals. The Sundogs penalty kill has given up a league-high 19 goals on 100 chances, an 81% success rate, ranking 12th in the CHL. Joey Sides has a short-handed goal as well.

- Defenseman Tyler Butler is tied for the team lead in scoring and ranks tied-for-ninth among CHL defensemen with ten points (3g/7a) in 13 games. The veteran d-man has picked up his 10 points in the last 11 games. His six power-play assists rank tied-for-fourth among CHL defensemen.
