
Gators downed by Gulls 4-3

San Diego CA. The longest single day road trip in IceGators history ended in disappointment as San Diego scored two unusual 3rd period goals to defeat Louisiana 4-3, Saturday night in the San Diego Sports Arena.
Arriving in San Diego after a 2,000 mile trip, the Gators showed no signs of jet lag by taking a 2-1 lead after the first period. Mark Pederson opened the scoring at 3:38, as the former Philadelphia Flyer converted a 2 on 1 down low for his 8th of the season. Wes Mason answered for the Gators 37 seconds later at 4:15. Defenseman Josh Barker stole the puck and fed Mason in the slot, the veteran backhanded the puck between the pads of Mathieu Chouinard for his 18th of the year and a 1-1 tie. Louisana took the lead at 5:51 when Dan Sullivan followed his own centering pass and backhanded the puck into the net for his 4th of the season. Roger Leonard and Shawn Skiehar getting assists on the play. The action was fast paced for the first 20 minutes as the Gulls outshot Louisiana 18-13.
The Gulls tied the game at 2 just 20 seconds into the 2nd period as Max Birbraer (9) scored on the power play. The Gators were not able to clear the puck and turned it over through the middle and Birbraer stepped into the puck and beat Nathan Marsters for the tie game. Marsters would not allow another goal in the period as the Gulls out shot the Gators 17-10.
David Bararuk put the Gators in front on a power play goal at 4:10 of the 3rd period. Bararuk launching a wrist shot from the left circle to the top shelf, his 11th , assists going to Barker and Dagenais.The Gulls would get the next two goals on fortunate bounces and with it the hockey game. At 7:30, the Gators killing a penalty, when Marsters made a save, the rebound to Bryan Perez, as he tried to cleat the puck, the shot bounced off the shin pads of Nikita Korovkin (5) into the net for a 3-3 tie. The next goal was also a bank shot as Scott Borders centering pass from behind the net hit Marsters and into the net for a 4-3 lead and the game winning goal at 11:38. Louisiana's record is now 16-18-3, 35 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators were outshot by San Diego 41-31. Power plays were 1-5 for the Gators and 2-5 for the Gulls. The Gators next game is 3,000 miles from California as the team will visit the east coast and take on the PeeDee Pride, Friday, January 24, 6:35pm CST.
