Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings replaced some injured bodies this week and headed south to play the Long Beach Ice Dogs twice and the Las Vegas Wranglers once.

Newcomers Rob MacGregor and Adam Campbell saw their first ECHL action on Wednesday (6-2 loss) against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Goaltender Kelly Shields replaced Jason Stone and made back to back starts in Las Vegas (3-2 loss) on Friday and again in Long Beach (4-1 loss) on Saturday night.

Until this week Jason Stone started twenty-one consecutive games. Forward Rob Voltera has hit the mark more often lately having scored points (seven goals and two assists) in eight of the last eleven. Voltera was held silent against the Wranglers on Friday but had success against the Ice Dogs on Wednesday with a goal and a helper. Voltera added a helper on Saturday in the 4-1 loss.

The Salmon Kings injury problems have been a factor. General Manager and Head Coach Bryan Maxwell has added four new players (D, Adam Campbell, D, Rob MacGregor, RW, Alexei Glukhov, G, Kelly Shields) on this current road trip to replace defensemen Brad Dexter and Corey Smith (30 day IR) and Aaron Plumb (7 day IR) and also forwards Ryan Watson (7 day IR) and Mike Barrie (30 day IR).

Wednesday January 12, 2005 @ Long Beach Ice Dogs – 6-2 Loss

The Salmon Kings week started in Long Beach on Wednesday with a 6-2 loss. Rob Voltera scored his thirteenth of the season and Seth Leonard netted his ninth. Cory Urquhart, David Walker (2), Evan Cheverie (2) and Chris Kenady replied for the Ice Dogs. Goaltender Jason Stone was replaced by Kelly Shields in the game.

Friday January 15, 2005 @ Las Vegas Wranglers – 3-2 OT Loss

Victoria then flew to Las Vegas to face the Wranglers on Friday night. With an eight game losing streak looming over their heads the Salmon Kings finally were able to get a lead, opening the scoring for the first time in 2005. The Salmon Kings extended their lead and were up 2-0 heading into the final frame. Vegas crawled back in the game though, scoring at 11:45 and 19:28 of third, to send the game to overtime. At 1:21 of the extra period, Shawn Limpright scored a shorthanded game winner, and the Salmon Kings left Las Vegas with only a single point. Victoria's scoring came from defenseman Nate Forster and Ryan Finnerty's tenth.

Saturday January 16, 2005 @ Long Beach Ice Dogs – 4-1 Loss

Victoria traveled back to Long Beach to play the final game of the week on Saturday. The Salmon Kings were in the game after two, only trailing 2-1. They were unable to strike though in the third, which is normally their most productive frame and the Ice Dogs beat Shields twice more. Shields started his second straight game giving Jason Stone a well deserved rest. The goaltending duties had fallen squarely on the shoulders of Stone for most of the last month and a half. With the signing of Shields, Victoria now has a solid goaltending tandem. Shields played well again in Long Beach making 32 saves after a 42 save performance against the Wranglers.
