Garcia Tallies Three Hits, But Knights Fall 4-2

August 2, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release

(Indianapolis, IN) - Charlotte second baseman Drew Garcia recorded his second consecutive three-hit performance and scored a pair of runs, but the Knights dropped the series finale to the Indianapolis Indians 4-2 from Victory Field on Sunday. Erik Johnson allowed only two runs on four hits over five innings pitched in the tough-luck loss.

Garcia continued his stellar road trip by adding three more hits and scoring both Knights runs in the matinee. The switch-hitting second baseman tallied his first three-hit game of the season in game two from Victory Field on Saturday and recorded seven hits, two RBIs, and four runs scored in the three-game series. He batted .333 (12-for-36) over the ten-game road trip, with a hit in eight of those ten games, including each of his last five.

A pair of walks led to two runs in the bottom of the third inning for the Indians. After Keon Broxton and Dan Gamache pulled off a double-steal, Elias Diaz came through with a two-RBI single to give Indy a 2-0 advantage. The pair of runs were the only scores allowed by Johnson, who tossed five-frames of four-hit ball. The International League strikeout leader also added three whiffs on the day to push his total to 110 on the season - five more than Louisville's Matt Buschmann for the league's top spot.

Nate Jones continued his MLB-rehab assignment by taking over for Johnson in the sixth inning. The hard-throwing righty surrendered a home run to Willy Garcia to lead-off the frame, but then struck out the next three batters he faced. The home run was the only run allowed by the MLB rehabber in six outings with the Knights.

Jason Coats added his team-leading 66th RBI of the season in the fifth frame with an RBI-ground-out that scored Garcia from third base. The TCU product's RBI total ranks third in the IL, despite playing only 91 games in Triple-A after starting the season with the Double-A Birmingham Barons.

Garcia led-off the top of the seventh inning with his first triple of the season, and scored his second run of the game when Justin Sellers lifted a sacrifice-fly to center field a batter later to cut the Indianapolis advantage to 3-2. Broxton completed the scoring in the game in the bottom half of the frame with his fourth homer of the season. The solo shot came against J.B. Wendelken and gave the Indians a 4-2 lead.

The Charlotte Knights will have a day off on Monday before embarking on a ten-game home stand starting Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. IL North Division foe the Buffalo Bisons will be the first of three teams to play the Knights during the home stand, and the first of three games against the Toronto Blue Jays affiliate will start at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
