Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Looking to avoid their second straight road sweep, the Mud Hens took on the Louisville Bats in the finale of a three game series. Per usual, Thad Weber pitched well for Toledo, and the offense came up big down the stretch. With two runs in the ninth inning, the Hens were able to force extra innings. However, the Bats were still able to win the game 4-3 and complete the sweep.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Weber gave up a solo home run to Adam Duvall that put Louisville on top 1-0. The Hens responded in the second inning though. Leading off the inning, Daniel Fields sent the second pitch of his at bat over the right field wall to tie the game. The Bats would one-up Toledo in the bottom half of the second. Ryan Lamare led off the inning with a double, and then Kristopher Negron followed a batter later with an RBI double that gave Louisville a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Bats lengthened their lead by adding an insurance run. Chris Berset led off with a single up the middle, and then Louisville played small ball with a bunt that advanced Berset to second. It paid off for them, as they got a one out single from Irving Falu that scored Berset to give the Bats a 3-1 lead.
The Hens mounted their comeback in the ninth inning. Trayvon Robinson led off the inning with a walk. Bryan Holaday followed with a single, and then Josh Wilson hit an RBI single up the middle to pull Toledo within one. After Louisville made a pitching change, Dixon Machado welcomed Drew Hayes to the mound with a bunt single that tied the game at three.
Weber was able to make it through seven innings, and Guido Knudson came on in the eighth. Knudson got through the eighth inning spotless, but struggled with command in the ninth, walking three batters. He was able to get out of the jam though, and the Mud Hens went to extra innings tied 3-3. Rafael Dolis followed in extras and pitched two scoreless innings. Drew VerHagen entered in the twelfth inning, and got through two scoreless, but with two outs in the fourteenth inning, allowed an RBI single to Hernan Iribarren to end the game.
The Mud Hens return to Fifth Third Field on Monday for a seven game home stand. Monday night Toledo faces the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at 7 p.m.
