Dean, Avery Lead Wings to Win

Xavier Avery hit a grand slam, to back a strong start by Pat Dean as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Syracuse Chiefs 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The win, combined with Buffalo's loss Sunday, moved the Wings into second place in the International League North Division.

The Red Wings leave for an 11-day road trip Monday, and return home August 14 for Red Wings Hall of Fame Night and post-game fireworks. Complete promotion details below...

Dean took the mound Sunday, looking to improve on what was a solid outing his last start in Toledo, where he gave up nine hits and five earned runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Dean struck out two in the first inning Sunday.

The Wings had a two-out scoring opportunity in their half of the first inning Sunday, against Syracuse starter Taylor Hill. Reynaldo Rodriguez increased his hitting streak to 10 games with a double, and Hill hit Oswaldo Arcia with a pitch to put runners at first and second. Hill struck out Danny Ortiz to end the scoring bid.

Dean sailed through the first three innings perfectly, not allowing a hit and striking out four batters. He received some help defensively from his outfield. Center fielder Eric Farris made a spectacular diving catch in the second, and left fielder Avery made a great running grab in the third to help Dean stay perfect.

The Wings kept the pressure on Hill (3-6) and made a dent into the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third. Doug Bernier led off with an infield single. Danny Santana reached base on an error and James Beresford followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Rodriguez, the Wings' hottest hitter, popped out in foul territory for the first out. The bases remained loaded for Arcia. However, after ripping a pitch to right field just foul, he struck out for the second out of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ortiz got an RBI the easy way by drawing a walk, with Bernier scoring the first run of the game. With Ortiz on first, Beresford on second, and Santana on third, Avery stepped up to the plate and lined the first pitch he saw over the left field bullpen for a grand slam to put the Wings up 5-0.

Dean got into trouble in the top of the fourth inning. He walked his first batter, ending the perfect game bid. Then, he gave up his first hit of the game. He worked his way out of trouble, getting a double play ground out to end the inning and keep the shutout intact.

The Wings threatened to increase their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez singled to open the inning. He stole second during Arcia's at-bat, and Arcia moved him to third with a ground out. With Rodriguez on third and one out, the Wings were unsuccessful in bringing the run home as Ortiz popped out and Avery grounded out to end the frame.

Hill's day came to an abrupt end in the bottom of the sixth. With Farris on first and two out, Santana lined a pitch back at Hill, hitting his pitching elbow. He came out of the game due to the injury. Beresford greeted the new pitcher Scott McGregor with a bloop single to left center that scored Farris from second, to extend the lead for the Wings to 6-0.

Through seven innings, Dean had allowed just two singles and two walks, with seven strikeouts. The Chiefs doubled their hit total in the eighth inning, with a pair of one-out hits off Dean. A flyball out and a strikeout stranded the Chiefs' runners and kept the 6-0 lead.

Dean (8-9) took the mound in the ninth inning, looking for his third complete game of the season and the Wings' 13th shutout of the season. Dean struck out Matt Skole, the ninth strikeout of the day and a season-high for Dean. A flyout, and strikeout number 10 closed the book on the game and the Chiefs. Dean allowed four hits and two walks to go with the 10 strikeouts; Dean threw 117 pitches, 82 for strikes.

Double-A Chattanooga catcher Stuart Turner is the Twins minor league Player of the Week...Turner played in five games for the Lookouts, hitting .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, one home run, four RBI, six runs scored and six walks with a .609 on-base percentage...in 73 games for the Lookouts this season, Turner has hit .220 (55-for-250) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 25 RBI...the Louisiana native was drafted by the Twins in the third round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft from the University of Mississippi...The 2015 Red Wings team card sets are available, online by clicking here and in the Red Wings Team Store at Frontier Field...The Twins placed left-handed pitcher Tommy Milone on the 15-day disabled list (left elbow strain) and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Tyler Duffey from Triple-A Rochester.
