Gwinnett Blanks Bulls 5-0 to Complete Sweep

DURHAM, NC - Left-handed starting pitcher Greg Smith and two relievers combined for a two-hit shutout for the Gwinnett Braves (56-51), who blanked the Durham Bulls (52-56) by a 5-0 score on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The win gave the Gwinnett its first-ever three-game sweep of the Bulls in Durham since the franchise moved from Richmond in 2009. It also moved the G-Braves up further in the standings. They now stand 3.0 games behind the Columbus Clippers in the International League Wild Card race and 1.5 games behind the Charlotte Knights for second place in the IL South Division.

Smith (W, 4-4) was solid, going 6.0 innings in a quality start for the win. He gave up only two singles, walked three and struck out two. Right-handed reliever David Carpenter (H, 9) went 2.0 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Righty Carlos Fisher did not allow a batter to reach base in bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

The first run for Gwinnett came in the top of the fourth against Durham right-handed starting pitcher Bradin Hagens (L, 1-3). Joey Terdoslavich led off with a walk, moved to second on a groundout by Cedric Hunter and advanced to third on a groundout by Sean Kazmar. Jordan Lennerton plated Terdoslavich by dropping a single into shallow left field for a 1-0 lead.

The G-Braves added to the lead in the top of the eighth, as Mallex Smith led off by reaching on a throwing error from Durham shortstop Hak-Ju Lee. Eric Young, Jr. then singled to right and each moved up one base on a wild pitch from Durham left-hander Everett Teaford. Terdoslavich followed with a single to left, scoring both Smith and Young to push the lead to 3-0.

The hit also raised Terdoslavich's hitting streak to a season-high 12 games. With two outs, Lennerton singled to center, pushing Terdoslavich to third, and Mycal Jones drilled a single to right, scoring Terdoslavich for a 4-0 lead.

The finally tally for Gwinnett came with two outs in the top of the ninth. Durham righty Jose Dominguez walked Young, who promptly stole second and scored on a single to left by Terdoslavich.

For the Bulls, Hagens went 5.1 innings with two hits, one run, four walks and four strikeouts. Lefty C.J. Riefenhauser worked 1.0 inning with two strikeouts. Teaford was credited with 1.1 innings with four hits, three runs (one eared), one walk and two strikeouts. Dominguez worked 1.1 innings with one hit, one run, one walk and one strikeout.

Offensively, Gwinnett was led by Terdoslavich, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs and two walks. Lennerton was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Young scored twice and was 1-for-3 with two walks.

The only two hits by Durham were a single by Richie Shaffer in the bottom of the second and a single by Luke Maile in the bottom of the third.

The G-Braves return to Coolray Field on Monday night to being a seven-game homestand. Game one of a four-game series against the Rochester Red Wings will start at 6:35 p.m. and feature right-hander Victor Mateo (6-6, 2.68 ERA with Double-A Mississippi) on the mound for Gwinnett. Righty Jose Berrios (2-0, 3.52) gets the start for Rochester. Tony Schiavone has the call beginning at 6 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com.
