The Texas Stars and the Houston Aeros meet for the 11th time this season and the 35th time in AHL history. The Stars and the Aeros will face off one more time this year with the season finale in Houston. The two teams last met on Friday, February 24th, a 3-2 win for the Stars at home. The road team has taken six of the ten previous games in the series. Houston leads the season series, posting a 5-2-2-1 mark against the Stars. Veteran center Jeff Taffe is third on the team with 22 assists and is third with 32 points in 48 games played. Taffe leads the club with 16 power-play assists and 134 shots on goal. He is also a team-worst -18 this year. Rookie Kris Foucault has moved into fourth on the team in points, he has ten goals and 25 points in 50 games played. The Aeros top-scoring defenseman is Chay Genoway, who has 17 assists and 22 points in 50 games played. Of Genoway's 22 total points, 14 have come on the power play.
With a plethora of injuries in Minnesota, the Wild have relied heavily on its AHL affiliate. Former Texas Star Warren Peters is in Minnesota, joined by forwards Casey Wellman, Carson MacMillan, Chad Rau, Jed Ortmeyer, Matt Kassian and defenseman Nate Prosser.
In goal, the Aeros feature Matt Hackett and rookie Darcy Kuemper. After leading the Aeros to the Calder Cup Finals in 2011, Hackett is 16-13-4 in his second season with the Aeros. He sports a 2.42 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. Hackett has played in three games for Minnesota this year, going 2-0-0 with a 0.85 goals against average and a .977 save percentage. Kuemper is 6-5-4 with a 2.37 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. Dallas Assigns Fraser The Dallas Stars announced on Friday that the club has assigned forward Matt Fraser to the Texas Stars, Dallas' primary affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). Fraser was recalled on Feb. 22 and was a healthy scratch in Thursday night's game at Chicago.
Fraser, 21, appeared in his first career NHL game earlier this season against Anaheim on Jan. 24. In 50 games for Texas this season, Fraser ranks second on the team in scoring with 42 points (26 goals, 16 assists). He leads the club with 26 goals and ranks fourth overall in goal scoring in the AHL. The rookie needs one goal to tie the team record of 27 goals scored in the regular season. The 6-2, 207-pound forward was signed to a three-year entry-level contract by Dallas on Nov. 17, 2010. Stars Sign Defenseman Brodie The Texas Stars announced on Thursday that the team has signed defenseman Cameron Brodie to a PTO.
Brodie is a second-year pro who spent the first 43 games of the year with Stockton of the ECHL. In his time with the Thunder, Brodie totaled five points (all assists) and 54 penalty minutes. He also spent his rookie season with Stockton in 2010-11, scoring two goals and totaling 12 points in 60 games played. Prior to turning pro, the 23-year old played junior hockey in the BCHL from 2004-09 and one year at the University of British Columbia in 2009-10. Brodie will look to make his AHL debut this weekend when the Stars host the Houston Aeros. Texas Adds Layton The Texas Stars announced on Wednesday that the club has recalled forward Nick Layton from the Allen Americans, the Stars' Central Hockey League affiliate.
Layton has played in 50 games for the Allen Americans of the CHL this season. During his time with the Americans, Layton scored 13 goals and added 23 assists for 36 points. The 23-year-old forward turned pro after playing the 2010-11 season at the University of New Brunswick, posting one goal and six points in 24 games played. In 2010-11, Layton joined the CHL's Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs for their playoff run. The right wing played in 20 playoff games, scoring seven goals and totaling 17 points to help the Mudbugs win the CHL's Miron Cup. He made his Texas and AHL debut on Wednesday at Oklahoma City. LAST TWO GAMES Houston 2 at Texas 3 2/24/12 The Texas Stars defeated the Houston Aeros 3-2 in front of 5,654 fans at the Cedar Park Center on Friday night. Texas goalie Tyler Beskorowany stopped 39 of 41 shots to hold off Houston and give his team the win. Stars' left wing Francis Wathier scored the game-winning goal early in the third period. Two Texas skaters had multi-point nights. Center Scott Glennie registered a goal and an assist, while right wing Colton Sceviour put up two assists in the win. Center Angelo Esposito also scored for the Stars, who picked up their 11th home win in the last 15 tries. Aeros' forward Justin Fontaine added two assists in the loss. Defenseman Kris Fredheim and right wing Jon DiSalvatore scored for the Aeros. Houston goalie Darcy Kuemper stopped 30 of 33 shots as the Aeros fell to 16-10-0-3 on the road. Texas 1 at Oklahoma City 5 2/22/12 The Texas Stars were defeated by the Oklahoma City Barons 5-1 in front of 2,259 fans at the Cox Convention Center on Wednesday night. Forward Mark Arcobello led the way with two goals and two assists as the Barons picked up their fourth win of the season over Texas. Oklahoma City goalie David LeNeveu did the rest, stopping 31 shots to preserve the win. After Texas defenseman Jordie Benn gave his team a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, Oklahoma City answered back with five straight goals to improve to 15-9-2-2 at home this season. Texas goalie Andrew Raycroft stopped 14 of 18 shots, but he was pulled after giving up the fourth goal of the night in 32:25 of work. Goalie Tyler Beskorowany made 16 saves on 17 shots in a relief effort. Texas 1 at Oklahoma City 5 2/22/12
The Texas Stars were defeated by the Oklahoma City Barons 5-1 in front of 2,259 fans at the Cox Convention Center on Wednesday night. Forward Mark Arcobello led the way with two goals and two assists as the Barons picked up their fourth win of the season over Texas. Oklahoma City goalie David LeNeveu did the rest, stopping 31 shots to preserve the win. After Texas defenseman Jordie Benn gave his team a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, Oklahoma City answered back with five straight goals to improve to 15-9-2-2 at home this season. Texas goalie Andrew Raycroft stopped 14 of 18 shots, but he was pulled after giving up the fourth goal of the night in 32:25 of work. Goalie Tyler Beskorowany made 16 saves on 17 shots in a relief effort.
