Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga will continue their six game home-stand this weekend at the Hershey Centre as they will take on the North Bay Battalion and the London Knights. After falling to the Windsor Spitfires on Friday night, the Steelheads countered with wins against Sudbury and, most recently, a 5-1 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs yesterday afternoon in their annual school day game. The two game winning streak is the first time the team has won consecutive games this season. The team is currently tied with Barrie for first in the division, however, the Colts do have four games in hand on the Trout.
Yesterday, the Steelheads played their annual school day game against the Hamilton Bulldogs that saw the team prevail 5-1. Daniel De Sousa opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, and as a Steelhead which was followed by Thomas Lattavo's third of the season just 50 seconds later to give Mississauga the early 2-0 lead. Nathan Bastian would score his ninth of the campaign later in the frame to give the Steelheads a 3-0 lead heading into the second. Joseph Mizzi would record his first goal of the season to cut the Steelheads lead to two. Mississauga didn't generate much in the frame as the team took four minor penalties and a double minor as limited their time in the offensive zone. Hamilton wasn't able to capitalize on any of their opportunities however as Jack Flinn turn everything he saw away to preserve the Steelheads lead going into the third period. The Steelheads would pad their lead as Ryan McLeod would record his first career OHL goal after a Nicolas Hague shot deflected off his hand and slid past goaltender Charlie Graham to make it 4-1 Trout. Minutes after McLeod, Alex Nylander would finish off a shorthanded rush for his 13th goal of the season to put the game out of reach and give the Steelheads the 5-1 victory. Nathan Bastian lead the way with three points (G, 2A) while Ryan McLeod, Alex Nylander and Everett Clark all recorded two points. Jack Flinn stopped 23 of 24 shots for his 11th win of the season.
Mississauga will welcome North Bay to the Hershey Centre for the second time this season as the two teams will square off for the third time this year. The Battalion took the first meeting between in North Bay on Thanksgiving Day by a score of 5-3 while the Steelheads defended their turf with a 4-2 victory over the Battalion on October 25th. The Battalion currently sit fourth in the Central Divison, four points behind the Steelheads and Barrie Colts. North Bay have played well over the last two weeks as the team has won two straight and three of their last four. The Battalion last played in North Bay against the Barrie Colts where they scored a season high seven goals, including five in the second period, that saw them cruise to a 7-3 victory. The Battalion chased Mackenzie Blackwood from the game in the second after he allowed 4 goals on 13 shots. This is an impressive feat as Blackwood leads the league in save % at .927%. Captain Mike Amadio lead the team as he recorded six points in the game (2G, 4A) while winger and alternate captain Mathew Santos contributed with five points of his own (1G, 4A) to lead North Bay secure the win. North Bay looks to continue the trend as they will face off against the Kingston Frontenacs tonight at the North Bay Memorial Gardens before making the three and a half hour bus ride down to Mississauga.
Following Friday night's tilt with the Battalion, the London Knights will make their one and only stop to the Hershey Centre to take on the Trout. Going into tonight's game against the Generals, London has played extremely well as the team has won 8 of their last 10 games. The Knight currently sit in third place in the Midwest Divison, 7 points back of both the Kitchener Rangers and the Erie Otters. London last played on Saturday in Erie as the team lost 3-1 to the Otters. Prior to that, the Knights had won five straight which saw the team show off their offence dominance as they netted 38 goals in those five gives. The Knights defeated the Spitfires 6-3 on October 30th then followed it up with a 7-0 victory in Saginaw, a 6-0 win in the Soo, and finally 9-2 and 10-4 wins against the Guelph Storm. In their 9-2 victory, Arizona Coyotes draft pick, Christian Dvorak tied a Knights record with five goals in the contest. Their offensive outburst now gives them the most goals in the OHL with 97, which is three more than Erie's 94. Their offensive fire power is mainly fueled by Christian Dvorak, Leafs prospect Mitch Marner and draft eligible Matthew Tkachuk as all three of them are in the top 5 in OHL scoring. JJ Piccinich, who is also a Leafs prospect, has had an excellent start to his season as he has recorded 25 points in 16 games for the Knights. To put in perspective how good London's offence has been this year, Kole Sherwood and Aaron Berisha, who are tied for fifth on London with 20 points, would be leading seven teams in that category and on four other teams, would be second or tied for second.
