Game Preview: New England Revolution vs. Portland Timbers

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution (7-10-8, 29 pts.) will host the Portland Timbers (11-7-7, 40 pts.) in the clubs' first and only meeting of the season on Saturday, Sept. 1. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium and will be televised locally on NBC Sports Boston with Brad Feldman, Paul Mariner, and Naoko Funayama calling the action. Authenticated subscribers may stream the match on NBCSportsBoston.com and on the NBC Sports app. The contest airs on the radio with 98.5 The Sports Hub broadcasting the action in English and 1260 AM Nossa Radio providing Portuguese commentary.

Before making the cross-country trip to Foxborough, the Timbers claimed a 2-0 home win over Toronto FC on Wednesday night to move into fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Revs are looking to make up ground in the Eastern Conference race, where they trail Montreal by four points for the sixth playoff spot. The last time the two teams faced each other was on April 2, 2017, when the Revolution traveled to Providence Park and earned a 1-1 draw against the Timbers. New England holds a 1-2-5 all-time record against Portland.

Following Saturday's match, the Revolution will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5 against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. The clubs' second and final meeting of the season will kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.

- New England (29 points) potentially moving within one point of the Montreal Impact (33 points) for the sixth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a win.

- The club boasting at least two 10-goal scorers for the second straight year, and the fifth time in club history. Teal Bunbury has 11 goals while Cristian Penilla (9) and Diego Fagundez (7) are approaching the double-digit mark. The Revs have never had three players with 10-or-more goals in the same campaign.

- Midfielder Diego Fagundez recording two more goals to become the youngest MLS player to reach 50 career regular season goals, per the Elias Sport Bureau.

- Defender Michael Mancienne potentially making his third MLS and Revolution appearance after playing 90 minutes in back-to-back matches.

- There are several notable connections between the Revolution and Portland:

o Revolution forward Cristian Penilla and Timbers forward Andy Polo were teammates on Liga MX side Morelia in 2017. Penilla registered the assist on Polo's first goal with Morelia on Jan. 31, 2017.

o Revolution forward Revolution forward Teal Bunbury, Revolution midfielder Scott Caldwell, and Timbers defender Zarek Valentin were teammates at Akron University in 2009.

o Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese played for the Revolution in 1999. In 27 appearances for the club, he registered 10 goals and two assists.

o Timbers assistant coach Carlos Llamosa was an assistant coach for the Revolution in 2017. He also played for New England from 2002-05. Llamosa made 38 appearances for the Revs and helped the club to an MLS Cup appearance in 2002. Llamosa and Revolution Head Coach Brad Friedel were teammates on the United States Men's National Team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
