TONIGHT:
The defending Pacific Division champions Ontario Reign (0-0-0-0) face the Alaska Aces (0-0-0-0) in their opening match of the 2014-15 regular season. Alaska finished the 2013-14 season atop the ECHL, as the club won the former Mountain Division, the Brabham Cup and the 2014 Kelly Cup in a six-game series against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE, AND YOUR ENEMIES CLOSER:
The Reign and Aces have always had a competitive rivalry, but that animosity is likely to be kicked up a notch this season, as they are now divisional rivals, with last year's Western Conference being moved entirely within the Pacific Division. Ontario and Alaska are likely to be in a dogfight all season long as both teams each chase one of four coveted playoff spots within the Pacific. If last year's identical 4-4-0-0 records for both teams against each other are any indication, this is one of the premier matchups in the league.
ROCCO'S MODERN LIFE:
Reign forward Rocco Carzo added some muscle to his 6-foot-1 frame during the offseason, and it showed in Ontario's two preseason games, as he led the Reign in scoring during the preseason with two goals and an assist. The sophomore will look to build on last season's performance after his production with Ontario in 2013-14 rose to nearly a point per game after being acquired from the Florida Everblades.
OFF TO A GOOD START:
Historically, the Reign have fared well in opening games to start the season. Ontario is 4-2-0-0 in season-opening games, and 3-1-0-0 in season-openers on the road.
