Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
A Night To Forget
The Aberdeen IronBirds suffered their most lopsided loss of the season last night, 13-1 at the hands of the Lowell Spinners. Lowell did not wait long to jump on top, as they loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on Aberdeen starter Lucas Long. By the time the IronBirds batted in the second, they trailed 5-0. The Spinners added three more runs in the third, a single run in the fifth, three more in the sixth and another single run in the seventh. Long took the loss, going 2.1 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs (all earned), walking one and striking out three. Nigel Nootbaar, Bobby Bundy, and Stefan Crichton all pitched in relief last night and the Spinners scored at least one run off of each of them. Offensively for the IronBirds, they had six hits, one each from Federico Castagnini, Oswill Lartiguez, Austin Anderson, Hector Veloz, Riley Palmer, and Jonah Heim. Anderson scored the IronBirds' lone run of the game, scoring on a passed ball in the ninth inning with two outs.
Defense Continues Nice Run
The IronBirds tied a franchise record last night by completing their fourth game in a row without committing an error. The last time that happened was July 31-August 3, 2003. The IronBirds have now played 43.2 consecutive innings since their last error, which came in the first inning of Sunday's contest at home against the Spinners.
Down the Stretch They Come
Following tonight's game, there will be just three games left in the 2014 season. Stephen Tarpley will start tomorrow's series finale in Lowell, while Matthew Grimes and Brian Gonzalez will start the final two home games of the season, Sunday and Monday. Sunday's first pitch is at 5:35 p.m. and Monday is a 2:35 p.m. start time. Both games are against the Hudson Valley Renegades.
On the Mound Tonight...
The IronBirds will send LHP John Means to the mound tonight. In his last outing back on the 22nd, Means earned his first professional win as the IronBirds beat the Spinners 5-2. Means went five innings, allowed five hits and two runs, walking one and striking out five. In 31.1 innings pitched for Aberdeen this season, Means has struck out 27 and allowed only two walks. He will be opposed by the Spinners' RHP Aaron Wilkerson. He is 4-1 on the season with a 1.88 ERA and went eight innings in his last start, which came Sunday against the IronBirds at Ripken Stadium.
