State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Will Anderson made another quality start for the State College Spikes, but the Batavia Muckdogs scored five runs in the 10th inning to down the Spikes, 6-1, on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Spikes (45-28), who now fall to the third seed in the New York-Penn League playoffs with three games remaining in the regular season. State College is tied with the Tri-City ValleyCats for the second seed, but Tri-City holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Spikes are now also two games back of the top seed held by Hudson Valley.
Anderson delivered his seventh quality start of six innings or more with three earned runs or less in 12 outings this year, and reduced his earned run average to 2.43, good for fourth in the NYPL. The right-hander allowed one run on Brad Haynal's RBI single in the third inning, and gave up a total of six hits while striking out three batters over six innings of work.
State College took the opening lead of the game in the second when Alex De Leon walked, moved to third base on Jake Stone's single, and scored on a wild pitch.
After Batavia (33-40) tied the game, both teams fired zeroes until the extra frame, when three hits, including John Norwood's two-run single, two errors and two hit batsmen gave the Muckdogs enough to win.
Nick Thompson and Brett Wiley each produced multiple hits for the Spikes. State College had the opportunity to win the game with runners on first and second and no outs in the ninth, but a double play and a groundout ended that threat.
Josh Lucas (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Spikes, giving up five runs, all unearned, on three hits and an intentional walk. Lucas also recorded one strikeout.
Batavia reliever Josh Hodges (2-5) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of work in which he gave up three hits but struck out two.
Haynal and Norwood each collected two hits for the Muckdogs.
Saturday, the Spikes will finish their 2014 regular season home schedule against the Muckdogs with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Fernando Baez (2-2) to the mound to face Batavia left-hander Scott Squier (4-2).
