Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - A pitcher's duel through five innings, the Lowell Spinners and Aberdeen IronBirds had combined for just three hits. The Spinners plated a pair of runs in the sixth before erupting for six in the seventh and tacking on a run in the eighth for a 9-0 win over the IronBirds Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (37-35) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth. After Raymel Flores eluded a tag on a bunt single to start the inning, Dubon followed with a single on a hit-and-run play to move Flores to third. After a passed ball moved Dubon into scoring position as well, Aneudis Peralta doubled to plate both and give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.
The Spinners would extend their lead in the seventh emphatically, putting the game out of reach for Aberdeen. After Bryan Hudson led off the inning with a walk, a one-out single by Deiner Lopez put runners on the corners. Flores followed with a triple down the right field line, scoring both. Dubon followed with a single through the drawn in infield, extending the lead to 5-0. After Jordan Betts struck out, Peralta doubled to the gap in leftfield, scoring Dubon on a contested play at the plate as Peralta took third. Joseph Monge joined the extra-base party, scoring Peralta, before coming around on Mike Meyers franchise best 9th triple of the season, giving Lowell an 8-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Aaron Wilkerson (5-1, 1.62) who cruised through seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out a season-high nine batters. Over his last 28 innings, the right-hander has allowed just one run, dominating the NYPL opposition.
After Wilkerson departed, Aberdeen (24-48) threatened against Mario Alcantara in the eighth inning, but the right hander struck out Jay Gonzalez to end the inning. The Spinners tacked on an unearned run in the eighth and Alcantara set the IronBirds down in order in the ninths for a 9-0 final.
Offensively, the Spinners had another double-digit hit performance, tallying 12 hits. Dubon led the way, going 5-for-5 to raise his average to .325, now second in the NYPL. It was the second five-hit game by a Spinners player this month, joining Monge. Flores and Peralta added two hit games, driving in a combined five runs, while the Spinners had three triples in an inning for the first-time in franchise history.
The Spinners slim playoff hopes remained alive, as their Elimination Number remained at one as the Brooklyn Cyclones lost in Tri-City, 3-2.
The two teams conclude the home slate at LeLacheur Park Saturday evening with a 7:05 first pitch. Reed Reilly (0-1, 4.46) is on the mound for the Spinners and one final post-game fireworks show will end the season with a bang.
