Lowell Spinners News Release
The Spinners go for two-in-a-row tonight with Aaron Wilkerson on the mound. First pitch is at 7:05.
S P I N - N O T E S:
Pre-Game Fireworks: 1B umpire Ryan Wilhelms made a statement prior to the game, ejecting Spinners C David Sopilka and RHP Enfember Martinez after the two were determined to be participating in a " Bullpen Standoff " with the Aberdeen IronBirds bullpen...Wilhelms had made a similar ejection of Brooklyn Cyclones 3B Jhoan Urena earlier in the week and it has been a point of emphasis for the umpires...MGR Joe Oliver did not agree with decision and was ejected as well, leaving some equipment littered in front of the Spinners dugout before retreating to the bowels of the stadium.
Offense Ignited : The pre-game fireworks clearly ignited the Spinners offense as Lowell raced out to a five-run first inning lead en route to a 13-0 ninth inning lead before the IronBirds squeaked across a run in the ninth inning to ruin the Spinners shutout bid...The Spinners set a season-high for runs scored (13) and tied a season-high for hits (17) as seven Spinners had multi-hit games, led by DH Nick Moore, who was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored, and OF Bryan Hudson, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored ... OF Joseph Monge also had three RBI for the Spinners in the win.
Drehoff On Point: While the Lowell offense was firing on all cylinders, LHP Jake Drehoff was just as sharp, twirling six shutout innings, striking out a career-high eight batters...After allowing two first inning runs in a loss at Hudson Valley August 16, Drehoff has now thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings ... In his last six starts, Drehoff has gone five or more innings, allowing two or fewer runs in each outing, lowering his ERA from a season-high 5.71 to it ' s current mark of 3.54, best amongst qualifiers on the Spinners.
Still a Prayer: Though the odds are extremely long, perhaps even astronomically long, the Spinners have still not been mathematically eliminated from the New York-Penn League Wild Card chase...The Spinners are 3.5 games back of the Brooklyn Cyclones with four games to play, meaning one win by the Cyclones or one loss from the Spinners will eliminate the team from post-season contention.
Finishing Strong : Through the month of August, the Spinners have the best record in the New York-Penn League with a 16-8 record...Unfortunately for the Spinners, the only team playing at close to the same pace are the Wild Card leading Cyclones, who have posted a 16-9 record during the same time period...The Spinners, who ' ve hit all season long, have received a boost from the pitching staff, who have posted a 2.80 team ERA, striking out 163 while walking just 48 in 206 innings.
Bats Alive : The 17-hit offensive outburst was a season-high, but the Spinners offense has been on point all season long...Thursday night ' s performance raised the team ' s batting average to .266, tied for best in the NYPL with the State College Spikes...The franchise record for team batting average is .261, set by the 2005 team that included OF Jacoby Ellsbury and INF Jed Lowrie, a record now within reach of this year ' s Spinners.
Hudson Feeling It : After being retroactively credited a hit from mid-July earlier this week, OF Bryan Hudson has taken the chance out of the game, collecting eight hits in his last 14 at-bats...Hudson has raised his average in the process from .204 to .232 on the season with his modest four-game hitting streak.
