Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Collin Slaybaugh's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Staten Island Yankees an 8-7 walkoff victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Vermont took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Max Kuhn two-run double and Trent Gilbert RBI groundout, but the Yankees quickly tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the first off Lake Monsters starter Brett Graves before scoring another run in the second and two more in the third for a 6-3 lead. Seong-min Kim cut the deficit to 6-5 with a two-run double in the fourth inning, Kim's seventh two-run hit this season for Vermont.
The Yankees got another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Chris Breen, who was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI on the night. But that would be Staten Island's final run until the winning double in the 10th as Vermont relievers Daniel Gossett allowed one hit with five strikeouts in two scoreless innings and Michael Fagan two perfect innings with four strikeouts.
The Lake Monsters tied the game with single runs in the sixth when Gilbert scored on a wild pitch and in the eighth when John Nogowski scored from second base on a fielding error by Yankee second baseman Billy Fleming. Vermont reliever Corey Walter worked out of a winning run on third, one-out jam in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts, but Walter (2-1) walked Vicente Conde with two outs in the 10th before Slaybaugh's game-ending double. It was just the third walkoff loss of the season for Vermont (June 24th at Tri-City and July 12th at Jamestown).
Kuhn and Kim both had two hits to go along with their two-run doubles, while Nogowski was 3-for-5 with two runs scored as Vermont (32-41) fell to 1-3 in extra-inning games this season. After just 14 total hits over 36 innings in their first four games this season against Staten Island, the Lake Monsters collected 13 in the 10-inning loss on Friday. Connor Spencer was 2-for-5 with a run and RBI for Staten Island (37-35), while Ethan Carnes (3-0) picked up the win after getting out of a first and third with one-out jam in the top of the 10th with an inning-ending double play.
Vermont will play its final road game of the season on Saturday at Staten Island starting at 7:00 pm. The Lake Monsters then return to historic Centennial Field for the final two games of the season on Sunday and Monday against the Tri-City ValleyCats beginning at 5:05 pm each day.
